Why best: Light and atmosphere shift continuously outdoors, so a workflow that locks the value structure first and defers detail is the only approach that reliably survives changing conditions — chasing detail before values are set guarantees a painting with mismatched light by the time it's finished.

Steps
1. Set up efficiently — target under 10 minutes
Light changes every 20–30 minutes; slow setup wastes valuable time when light quality is optimal.
Equipment:
- Pochade box or French easel
- Limited palette (see Step 2)
- Panels, not canvas (panels are rigid; wind doesn't buckle them)
- Viewfinder or value finder (red filter to check values)
Site selection:
- Find your composition before unpacking — walk 3–5 viewpoints, choose the strongest
- Position easel with back to primary light source; avoid painting into direct sun
- Set up in shade where possible (ambient light reads values more accurately than full sun in your eyes)
2. Select a limited palette
Three-color plus white palette for most plein air:
- Warm yellow: Cadmium Yellow Light or Yellow Ochre
- Cool red: Alizarin Crimson or Cadmium Red Light
- Blue: Ultramarine Blue (warm) + Cerulean Blue (cool) optional
- White: Titanium White
Optional additions: Sap Green (convenience for foliage), Burnt Sienna (warm darks).
Avoid earth-tone-heavy palettes in full light conditions — they produce muddy results. The three-color palette forces mixing to match temperature shifts and produces cleaner color.
3. Establish a value structure in the first 20 minutes — this is the session
The biggest plein air mistake is chasing detail while light shifts. In the first 20 minutes:
- Block in large value shapes: mix a mid-value neutral; establish the sky, land, shadow masses, and light masses as flat shapes using a large brush (1-inch flat or filbert)
- No detail — large shapes only: sky is one shape; shadow side of trees is one shape; lit ground is one shape
- Check ratio: light vs shadow should match what you see — use your value finder (red filter) to see values without color confusion
- Note light direction: mark shadow direction on your panel edge if needed; you will need this reference when light shifts
This value structure is the painting. Everything added later reinforces it.
4. Apply color temperature relationships
Once values are blocked:
- Sunlit areas: warm (yellow-orange biased)
- Shadow areas: cool (blue-violet biased) — except in late afternoon, when shadows warm
- Sky reflects into shadows: mix a small amount of sky color into all shadow areas to maintain atmospheric unity
- Distance = cool + light-toned: aerial perspective desaturates and lightens far values; keep distant elements less saturated and closer to sky tone
Color temperature consistency is more important than accurate local color. A painting where warm/cool relationships are correct but local colors are off looks right; one with perfect local colors but wrong temperature looks dead.
5. Work from big to small — paint the whole, then details
After color temperature is established:
- Phase 1 (done): value masses
- Phase 2 (current): color temperature, atmospheric perspective
- Phase 3 (optional): one or two focal details — a bright roof, a foreground rock, a figure
Time budget: if light changes, stop at Phase 2. A complete, well-lit large-shape painting is stronger than a detailed painting with shifted light.
Reserve 10–15 minutes for a final edit: squint at the painting from 6 feet; compare to scene. Adjust one or two spots, then stop.
6. Work quickly when light quality peaks
Golden hour (1 hour before sunset/sunrise): most dramatic light quality. Budget:
- 0–20 min: value blocking
- 20–45 min: color temperature pass
- 45–60 min: edit and finalize
Cloudy day advantage: overcast light is flat but consistent — you have 3+ hours with stable conditions. Use this time to work more carefully on value accuracy and detail than a sunny session allows.
Common Mistakes
- Painting too long without blocking in values: Starting detail before establishing the value structure guarantees confusion when light shifts 30 minutes in.
- Squinting at detail instead of squinting at big shapes: Squinting simplifies — use it to check massing and value, not to locate brush marks.
- Matching local color instead of temperature: Grass is not always green; in shadow it's blue-green; in direct sun it may be yellow-green. Follow temperature, not local color.
When NOT to Use
- Studio paintings from reference photos: plein air time management (fast value block, resist detail) applies, but setup and light-lock concerns are irrelevant. Work from reference as slowly and carefully as needed.
