Steps
1. Engine oil — check level and condition

Level: check the plastic overflow reservoir (labeled COOLANT or with a snowflake icon) — should be between MIN/MAX lines.
Condition:
- Color: green, orange, pink, or blue depending on type — uniform color is correct; rust-colored or brown = degraded; milky = oil contamination (head gasket)
- Test freeze protection with a coolant tester (hydrometer or refractometer): should protect to −34°F (−37°C) for most climates; adjust mix ratio if needed (50/50 antifreeze/water for most use)

3. Brake fluid — check level and moisture content

4. Power steering fluid (if hydraulic, not electric steering)
Level: check dipstick or MIN/MAX marks on the reservoir (varies by make; consult owner's manual for location)
Condition: should be clear or light pink/red; dark brown or burnt smell = degraded; replace. Foamy fluid = air in the system; inspect for low level and leaks.
Change interval: every 50,000–75,000 miles or as directed by manufacturer.
5. Transmission fluid
Level (for vehicles with a dipstick — not all do):
- Check with engine warm and running (for most automatics) in Park — consult owner's manual
- Color: translucent red = good; dark brown or burnt smell = degraded; pink/milky = water contamination
Condition: burnt smell is the clearest sign of degradation; modern sealed transmissions (many post-2010 vehicles) have no dipstick — service only by dealership or shop with specific equipment.

6. Windshield washer fluid — check and top off

7. Document findings
Log: date, mileage, all fluid levels/conditions. Flag any abnormal findings for investigation. Compare level readings month-over-month to detect slow leaks.
