Why This Is Best Practice
Why best: The vocal carries the melody and lyric that listeners connect to most directly, so errors anywhere in its chain — bad mic choice, untreated room, wrong processing order — are more audible and less forgivable than errors on any other track. A disciplined signal chain (mic → environment → EQ → compression → de-essing → effects, in that order) fixes problems at the source instead of masking them downstream, which is the only way to get a vocal that is both polished and natural.
Adopted by: Lead vocals are the most important element in most popular music productions; every professional recording engineer and producer prioritizes the vocal chain above all other elements. Berklee's vocal recording curriculum and Roey Izhaki's "Mixing Audio" both dedicate more content to vocal processing than any other element. Bob Power, Andrew Scheps, and Chris Lord-Alge are among the engineers whose vocal chain approaches are most studied in the production community.
Impact: A poorly recorded vocal cannot be corrected by processing; a well-recorded vocal in a treated room with an appropriate microphone requires minimal processing to sound professional. The production chain described here eliminates common vocal recording and mixing problems (room ambience, sibilance, inconsistent dynamics, harsh presence frequencies) that make amateur vocals sound amateurish.
Steps
1. Choose the right microphone for the voice
Microphone selection is the most impactful choice in the vocal chain:
- Large-diaphragm condenser (LDC): the standard for studio lead vocals; captures detail and presence; most common choice for pop, R&B, rock, country
- Bright condensers (Neumann U87, AKG C414): detailed, present; slightly harsh on sibilant or bright voices
- Darker condensers (Mojave MA-200, Warm Audio WA-47): more forgiving; better for high, thin, or nasal voices
- Dynamic microphones (Shure SM7B, ElectroVoice RE20): less sensitive to room acoustics; excellent for voices that distort or overdrive condensers; characteristic "radio" sound; used by many hip-hop and broadcast vocalists
- Ribbon microphones: warm, natural, vintage character; figure-8 pattern; used for specific tonal aesthetics; require more gain
Polar pattern: cardioid (front-facing) is standard for isolation; figure-8 or omnidirectional in specific room-treatment or ensemble scenarios.
Test 2–3 microphones on the voice in the actual room: the best microphone for the room and the voice, not the most expensive, produces the best result.
2. Set up the recording environment
Room acoustics affect every recording:
- Ideal: acoustically treated room with absorption panels at reflection points (primary reflections from walls behind and beside the vocalist)
- Acceptable: any small room with sound-absorbing furniture (books, sofas, rugs, hanging clothes); hard, parallel walls (bathroom, kitchen, empty room) produce audible reflections
- Portable treatments: a reflection filter (arc of absorption mounted on the mic stand) dramatically reduces rear and side reflections in untreated rooms
Microphone placement:
- 6–12 inches from the microphone; closer = more proximity effect (bass boost) on directional mics; more intimate sound
- Above eye level, angled slightly down toward the mouth: reduces plosives (p/b) hitting the capsule directly
- Pop filter: 2–4 inches between lips and microphone; reduces plosive air bursts
Gain staging: set the preamp gain so the loudest peaks reach -12 to -6 dBFS; leave headroom; avoid clipping on the way in.
3. Apply EQ — clean, enhance, and carve space
Vocal EQ sequence (always cut before boosting):
- High-pass filter: roll off below 80–120 Hz (removes low-frequency room rumble, handling noise, HVAC)
- Mud cut: reduce 200–400 Hz by 1–3 dB if the vocal sounds boxy or thick; frequency varies by voice
- Presence boost: boost 2–5 kHz by 1–3 dB for intelligibility and cut-through (the frequency range of vocal consonants and attack); adjust to avoid harshness
- Air enhancement (optional): gentle shelf boost 10–15 kHz adds airiness; use sparingly; can make sibilance worse if excessive
EQ moves should be subtle: if 5+ dB cut/boost is needed in a single band, the recording has a fundamental problem (wrong mic, wrong room, too much or too little gain) that processing cannot fully correct.
4. Apply compression — control dynamics and add character
Vocal compression maintains consistent perceived loudness and adds sustain/character:
- Threshold: set so the compressor is working on the louder portions but not crushing the quiet parts; aim for 4–8 dB gain reduction on peaks
- Ratio: 2:1–4:1 for transparent control; 4:1–8:1 for more obvious character; >8:1 for limiting effect
- Attack: 5–20 ms for transient clarity (too fast = kills consonants); faster attack for smoother sound; slower for more punch
- Release: 40–120 ms; too fast = pumping/breathing artifacts; too slow = sustained compression affecting the next phrase
- Makeup gain: restore perceived volume after compression; match the compressed output to the uncompressed level for A/B comparison
Parallel compression (NY compression): blend 100% dry vocal with a heavily compressed copy; maintains transient detail from the dry signal while adding density from the compressed signal.
5. Apply de-essing — control sibilance
Sibilance (harsh s and sh sounds) is the most common vocal recording problem:
- De-esser: frequency-sensitive compressor that only acts on sibilant frequencies (5–9 kHz range for most voices)
- Set threshold: de-esser engages only on harsh sibilant transients, not on all high-frequency content
- Avoid over-de-essing: excessive de-essing produces "lispy" sound; sibilants should be controlled but present
Alternatively: manual automation (automate a cut on the sibilant notes only) for the most transparent and controlled result.
6. Apply reverb and delay to place the vocal in space
Delay (echo):
- Slapback delay (50–120 ms): classic rockabilly and country sound; a single early reflection that adds depth without noticeably echoing
- Synced delay (quarter note, dotted eighth): adds rhythmic dimension; the echo pattern matches the song tempo; use 15–25% wet for subtle depth
Reverb:
- Room reverb (small): adds acoustic space without pushing the vocal back; sounds natural; good for intimate, present vocals
- Hall reverb (large): pushes the vocal back; epic; use for background vocals, not lead vocal that needs to stay in front
- Pre-delay: delay between the dry vocal and the start of the reverb (10–30 ms); prevents the reverb from obscuring the initial consonants of the vocal; allows the dry vocal to establish itself before the wet signal arrives
Routing: send reverb to an auxiliary bus (not as an insert) — allows parallel processing, easier control of wet/dry ratio, and sharing the reverb bus with other elements.
Common Mistakes
- Too much reverb on the lead vocal: a lead vocal drowning in reverb sounds distant, unclear, and loses the intimacy that makes vocal connection possible. Most lead vocals benefit from less reverb than the producer's instinct suggests.
- Compressing before EQ: compress after EQ (or use a second compressor pass after EQ); compression before EQ amplifies the EQ problems rather than shaping the sound you want.
- Recording in an untreated room and expecting EQ to fix it: room ambience recorded into the vocal cannot be removed by EQ; it can be masked but not eliminated. Treat the recording environment before recording.
When NOT to Use
- Live sound reinforcement: live vocal chains have different priorities (feedback rejection, quick setup, consistency across venues) than studio vocal production; the specific settings and tools differ substantially.
