Why This Is Best Practice

Adopted by: Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog" is the foundational text for marker-based training across species. Sarah Ellis's ISFM guidelines on feline welfare explicitly recommend positive reinforcement training as enrichment and as a tool for reducing stress during veterinary handling. Zoos and animal training facilities worldwide use clicker training for cooperative husbandry with cats (wildcats and domestic) as the standard approach. Impact: Contrary to popular belief, cats are highly trainable. The "cats can't be trained" belief reflects the use of inappropriate training methods (punishment-based approaches that cats respond to with avoidance) rather than trainability limits. Cats trained using operant conditioning at zoos cooperate with blood draws, injection, and physical examination voluntarily. For domestic cats, clicker training provides: cognitive enrichment (mental stimulation); improved handling tolerance (reduces vet stress); useful behaviors (target, sit, come); and a strengthened human-cat bond through cooperative interaction.

Steps

1. Set up sessions for success

Session structure:

• Duration: 2–5 minutes maximum per session; cats habituate quickly and sessions longer than 5 minutes show diminishing returns
• Frequency: 2–3 sessions per day for fastest learning; 1 session per day is sufficient for maintenance
• Before meals: cats are more food motivated when slightly hungry; avoid training immediately after a large meal
• Cat's choice: training only works when the cat is voluntarily engaged; if the cat walks away, the session is over — do not restrain

Equipment:

• Clicker: a small mechanical clicker (or a verbal marker like "yes" or a tongue click); the marker bridges the time gap between the behavior and the reward
• Treats: small, high-value treats the cat is highly motivated for (cooked chicken, freeze-dried meat, commercial high-value training treats); very small (pea-sized or smaller); 20–30 treats per session

2. Charge the clicker — pair click with treat

Before shaping any behavior, the cat must learn that the click predicts a treat:

• Click → immediately deliver treat (within 1–2 seconds)
• Repeat 10–15 times in the first session
• Test: does the cat look toward you or the treat source when it hears the click? If yes, the clicker is "charged"

The click marks the exact moment of the correct behavior; timing precision is the key skill in clicker training.

3. Teach the target behavior (foundation of all training)

Target training (touching a target stick or a hand target) is the entry point for all other behaviors:

• Present a finger or the tip of a target stick 1–2 inches from the cat's nose
• The cat will naturally investigate and touch the target with its nose
• Click the instant the nose touches the target → immediately treat
• Repeat; begin moving the target to different positions

Target training enables recall (cat follows the hand target to a location), leash training, voluntary position changes, and desensitization to handling.

4. Shape complex behaviors through successive approximations

Shaping breaks a complex behavior into a chain of smaller behaviors, each of which is reinforced until the full behavior is produced:

Example: Teaching "sit":

1. Click and treat any shift of the cat's weight backward
2. Click and treat when the hindquarters lower slightly
3. Click and treat only when the hindquarters touch the ground
4. Add a verbal cue ("sit") once the behavior is reliable: say the cue just before the cat offers the behavior

Key shaping rule: only increase the criteria once the current approximation is at 80%+ reliability; asking for too much too fast causes frustration and stops training progress.

Example: Teaching "come":

1. Click and treat when the cat takes one step toward you on the target
2. Gradually increase the distance the cat must travel before clicking
3. Add verbal cue ("come" or name) once reliable at short distances

5. Use clicker training for handling desensitization

Clicker training is particularly valuable for reducing cat distress during veterinary handling:

• Paw handling: target train to give paw → click and treat → progress to brief nail inspection → progress to nail clip (one nail per session initially)
• Carrier training: click and treat any investigation of the carrier → treat inside carrier → progress to door closed briefly → progress to being carried
• Brushing: click and treat for sniffing the brush → for tolerating one stroke → for tolerating brushing

Hospital visit desensitization:

• Visit veterinary clinic for non-medical "happy visits" — check-in, get treats from staff, leave without examination
• Condition the examination table as a positive surface through play and treats
• Dramatically reduces stress during actual examinations

Common Mistakes

• Clicking at the wrong moment: the click marks the behavior at the exact instant it occurs; clicking one second after the behavior has ended marks the subsequent behavior. Timing is the most important clicker training skill.
• Sessions that are too long: cats disengage when sessions are too long; the cat walking away is feedback that the session ran long or the reinforcement rate dropped. Keep sessions short and end while the cat is still engaged.
• Trying to train when the cat is not food motivated: a well-fed, sleeping cat will not engage in training. Wait for the cat to be alert and food-motivated.

When NOT to Use

• Cats in acute stress or distress: a cat that is actively fearful, hiding, or showing stress signals is not in a behavioral state that supports learning; address the underlying stressor before training.
