Design Argument Structure
Design a logical argument structure for academic or policy writing — developing a clear thesis, supporting with appropriate evidence, articulating logical warrants, and addressing counterarguments — to produce a persuasive, well-reasoned written argument.
Why This Is Best Practice
Adopted by: Stephen Toulmin's "The Uses of Argument" (1958) — Toulmin's model of argumentation (claim, data, warrant, backing, rebuttal, qualifier) is the standard framework in academic argumentation, debate coaching, and rhetoric instruction at universities worldwide. Booth, Colomb & Williams' "The Craft of Research" is the primary academic writing methodology text used at US universities. Graff & Birkenstein's "They Say / I Say" has been adopted at over 1,500 institutions and is the most widely used academic writing pedagogy text.
Impact: Undisciplined arguments have three common failures: theses that are too broad to be argued; evidence without explicit logical connections to the claim; and omission of counterarguments that a reader will raise. Each failure undermines the argument's credibility with an academic audience. The Toulmin framework addresses all three by requiring explicit articulation of the claim, the supporting data, and — crucially — the warrant that connects the data to the claim.
Steps
1. Develop a specific, arguable thesis
The thesis is the claim the argument is designed to prove — the one sentence that the entire paper supports:
- Arguable: the thesis should be contestable; someone with access to the same information could reasonably disagree
- Specific: broad theses ("climate change is a serious problem") are not arguable because no one disagrees; narrow theses ("carbon capture at current cost is not the most cost-effective emissions reduction strategy available") are arguable and directable
- Assertive: the thesis takes a position; questions, summaries, or observations are not theses
The thesis test:
- Can you explain the thesis in one clear sentence?
- Can you imagine a well-informed, reasonable person disagreeing?
- Does the thesis make a claim that requires evidence to support?
Development process: start with an observation ("I notice that carbon capture receives a large share of climate funding") → find the complication ("but I also see research suggesting other strategies are more cost-effective") → form the thesis ("current investment in carbon capture is disproportionate to its cost-effectiveness relative to alternative emissions reduction strategies")
2. Structure evidence by type and arrange for maximum persuasive force
Not all evidence is equal; academic arguments use multiple evidence types:
- Empirical evidence: research data, experimental results, statistics, documented cases; the strongest evidence type for empirical claims
- Expert authority: citation of recognized authorities in the field; strong when the authority is directly relevant; weak when the expert is outside their domain
- Logical inference: conclusions drawn through deductive or inductive reasoning; strong when the premises are established and the logic is valid
- Analogy: comparison to a similar case; useful for illustration but not sufficient as sole support for a claim
Evidence arrangement strategies:
- Strongest to weakest: place the most compelling evidence first; readers remember the beginning and may not reach the end
- Weakest to strongest: build to the most compelling evidence; suitable for oral arguments where the climactic structure produces impact
- Alternating strong/weak: intersperse strong evidence with explanatory material; maintains engagement while supporting the argument
Evidence-claim connection: each piece of evidence requires an explicit connection to the claim. "The data shows X" followed by "Therefore, [thesis claim]" is insufficient without the warrant: "This matters because [the principle that connects X to the claim]."
3. Articulate logical warrants
The warrant is the logical principle that connects evidence to claim — the most frequently missing element in student arguments:
- Implicit warrant (common error): presenting evidence and claiming it supports the thesis without explaining why
- Explicit warrant: "Research shows carbon capture costs $100/ton of CO₂ avoided [data]. Since cost-effectiveness per ton of CO₂ is the appropriate metric for comparing climate investments [warrant], carbon capture is less cost-effective than afforestation at $3–50/ton [comparison data]. Therefore, current investment levels in carbon capture are disproportionate [claim]."
Testing warrants:
- Is the warrant a generally accepted principle or does it itself require defense?
- Does the warrant actually connect this specific data to this specific claim?
- Could a reasonable person accept the data but reject the claim by rejecting the warrant?
If the warrant is controversial: defend it before using it to support the main claim.
4. Address the strongest counterargument
Booth, Colomb & Williams and Graff & Birkenstein both identify counterargument engagement as the mark of a mature academic argument. An argument that ignores counterarguments appears either unaware of them or afraid of them.
They Say / I Say structure (Graff & Birkenstein):
- Steel-man the opposing view: "Proponents of carbon capture argue that [the strongest form of their argument]"
- Acknowledge what is true in the counterargument: "This is true insofar as..."
- Pivot with a concessive rebuttal: "However, this view fails to account for..."
- Return to and reinforce your claim
The steel-man principle: engage with the strongest version of the counterargument, not a strawman; academic audiences will recognize the difference; engaging with a weak version of the opposition implies you haven't encountered (or cannot address) the strong version.
5. Design the argument's architecture before writing
Before drafting, map the argument's structure:

This architecture map reveals structural weaknesses before they are embedded in prose:
- Does each supporting claim actually support the main thesis?
- Are there gaps where evidence is asserted but not presented?
- Is the counterargument actually addressed or just acknowledged?
Common Mistakes
- Thesis that summarizes rather than argues: "This paper will discuss the effects of carbon capture on climate change" is a roadmap, not a thesis; a thesis is a claim, not a description of what the paper contains
- Evidence without explicit warrant: assuming the connection between evidence and claim is obvious; academic readers test every connection; make the connection explicit
- Strawmanning the opposition: engaging with a weakened version of the counterargument; a well-informed reader who holds the counterargument view will notice and discount the rebuttal
When NOT to Use
- Exploratory or analytical writing (literature reviews, analytical essays that describe without arguing): not all academic writing makes a claim; some academic forms (annotated bibliography, literature synthesis, case study description) organize and analyze without arguing a thesis; these forms have different structural requirements than argument-based writing.
