If the structure is long-winded and flat, listeners will "get off the bus" partway through no matter how good the song is; conversely, with a song they know well, it is precisely because they know "what development comes next" that they enjoy it with anticipation.
I. The Japanese Section Terminology System
Japanese (J-Pop) terms do not map one-to-one onto Anglo-American terms; when analyzing or communicating, sort them out first:

Hierarchy of melody (melody-craft terms): partial motif (部分動機) → motif (動機) → small phrase group (小楽節) → phrase group (楽節) → setsu (節) → whole song.
- All the melodies of a song should be explainable as transformations, transpositions, and expansions of just a few motifs.
- Definition of sabi (melody-craft version): the phrase group (楽節) that serves as the climax within the larger division of the setsu (節).
- The size of the climax at each level is proportional to the size of that block.
II. Standard Form Templates
1. Two broad categories by sabi position
- Suehirogari type (末広がり型, "opening ever wider toward the end"): [A→B→sabi] or [A→sabi].
- All sections other than the sabi are "お膳立て" (table-setting, i.e., preparation) leading toward the sabi.
- The vast majority of modern J-Pop belongs to this type.
- Cyclic-resolution type (循環解決型): [A→sabi→A] or [sabi→B→sabi].
- Returns to the opening melody at the end (ternary form, the principle of recapitulation).
- Very common in the 1960s and in enka / kayōkyoku / jazz standards; increasingly rare today.
2. The J-Pop royal-road whole-song template (suehirogari type)
Intro → 1A → 1B → 1-sabi → (interlude 1)

→ C-melo (ō-sabi) → 3-sabi (may modulate) → (3-sabi 2) → outro
Key points:
- Setsu construction: the three-part A−B−sabi construction is the most common form in Japanese pop (melody-craft: pure three-part construction of type a−b−c = onset − another viewpoint − integrated resolution).
- Why there is a "2-ban": the same melody + slightly different sound + completely different lyrics — an anti-boredom device.
- After the 2-ban, insert a C-melo/bridge (can use entirely new melody, chords, rhythm) to keep boredom at bay and push higher, then deliver one more sabi.
- Repetition-omission rule: 1st setsu A−A'−B−C → 2nd setsu A−B−C → the 3rd setsu may start straight from the sabi.
- A whole song is usually 2–3 setsu and 3–5 minutes; slow songs reduce the setsu count, fast songs add setsu (a BPM difference of 3x or more is balanced by setsu count).
- There is only one true standard: the listener neither tires of it for being too long nor feels shortchanged for it being too short, and finishes fully satisfied.

- The continuity between A and B is usually stronger than in the Verse=Chorus form.
- The expanded form A−A'−B−A'' = the classic kishōtenketsu (起承転結, intro-development-turn-conclusion) construction.
- Rare variant A−B−C: the final section does not recapitulate A, but is made into a melody that "repeatedly settles onto the same pitch, calming down as it ends," so it still sounds like "coming home."
4. Adding an introductory section (prelude segment)
Adding an introductory phrase group outside the main song at the very top of the piece is an extension usable by both major forms:
- Recitation-style prelude (朗読式前段, quiet lead-in): mid register + almost motionless pitch + simple rhythm + harmonically static accompaniment, even tempo rubato (free tempo) — beginning in a state "between recitation and song," smoothly guiding the listener into the work's world (extremely common in opera and musicals). Form: D (introduction) − [A−B−sabi] − [A−B−sabi].
- Soaring lead-in (高扬型导入, the reverse): the introduction begins with an exalted phrase group (opening with leaping intervals + high register), creating a huge gap from the everyday and yanking the listener into the work's world at once.
- Atama-sabi (頭サビ): the introduction uses the sabi directly — the most common option. C−[A−B−C]−[A−B−C] (Verse=Chorus); B−[A−B−A] (ternary form).
- Two ways to play it: performed as-is = a dazzling, showy opening; with thin accompaniment, slow tempo, and rubato = a smooth, narration-style (語り) lead-in.
5. EDM / club-music variants
Builds intensity over a far longer time span than song-oriented music (歌もの):
Start with four-on-the-floor kick (キック4つ打ち)
→ add hi-hat
→ add piano or similar chugging accompaniment (repeating in units of 8+ bars)
→ proper intro → A-melo → sabi
→ return to a drums-only section → loop……
- Characteristics: melody is optional; the structure is long and large; there are sections with only drums or only a synth pad, so thickness contrast is extremely sharp; arranged with drums at the center.
- Two reasons this structure works: (1) building up slowly suits dancing better; (2) drums-only sections make it easy for a DJ to mix into the next track.
- A structure that feels long-winded and boring at home is extremely effective on the dance floor — purpose determines form.
- Dance-track setsu construction is often A−A−A−…−A'−B: the Verse repeats a motif many times + a short Chorus.
- Extreme form: only one motif inside the setsu (a a a a). Repetition seeps into the unconscious and evokes a semi-involuntary bodily response — even without a big climax, the repetition itself forms the build.
6. Quick reference for other forms
- Binary form A (verse) − B (chorus): the basic Western pop/rock form.
- Bridge-insert form A − (short bridge) − sabi: instead of a full Verse 2, insert only a short connecting section (raising the register while heating up toward the sabi).
- Compound ternary form: [A−B−A]−[C−D−C]−[A−B−A].
- Hybrid form: A−B−sabi−A (Verse=Chorus followed by a recapitulation of the Verse).

7. Designing the setsu construction (working backward from the sabi)
Choose the construction by the number of phrase groups per setsu; the design principle is always "work backward with the sabi at the center":
- A construction (single phrase group): no change of character; plain and simple; when dance tracks repeat the same riff, even the in-setsu motif may be just one (a a a a).
- A−B construction (Verse=Chorus basic form): the binary-construction principle; common in Western rock/R&B, powerfully catchy.
- If you already have the sabi → work backward to "what kind of A would lead into it," decide how the setsu opens, then write A's first partial motif; if you already have A → think about what kind of sabi it should connect to.
- The sabi needs impact not only at its opening — the second half must also have a sufficient climax.
- A−B−C construction (the Japanese royal road): extremely common in J-Pop; still, think of the sabi (C) and the introductory section A first, set the plan for the middle part, and make B last.
- B as a bridge passage: a subdued A → a B of rhythm-emphasizing short-motif repetition with the register stepping upward → a groovy C.
- B as a second Verse: a light A → an introspective, quiet B → a C whose exaltation is intensified by the contrast; the latter small phrase group of B can be made into a short bridge that piles upward while leading out into C.
- A−B−A construction (ternary form): stages "deep poignancy" or "the openness of resolution" at the end of the phrase group; to fully realize the recapitulation effect, making B change the character drastically is standard practice.
- Expansion warning: before adding elements like A−B−C → A−B−C−D, first consider "phrase-group repetition" as the way to expand; too many elements → a winding path to the sabi and a diffuse focus.
- Adding a kime (キメ): any construction can add a roughly 2-bar kime at the end of a phrase group or inside the sabi; when the song feels lacking in dynamic contrast (メリハリ), consider this first.
8. Structural case studies of famous songs (for analytical reference)
- Keisuke Kuwata, "Shiroi Koibito-tachi" (白い恋人達): a dense showcase of the royal road — short intro going straight into the vocal; 2A has a catchy counter-melody; the interlude expands dramatically like another song; a quiet, deeply emotional section is placed right before the finale — drop first, then charge to the peak, doubling the emotional payoff.

III. Concrete Techniques for Contrast Between Sections
The sense of sections does not come from slapping on labels; it comes from contrast in the nature of the motion.
Premise: the character of the same material is determined by context — if what precedes it is a static phrase, it is heard as a small climax; if what precedes it is a soaring phrase, it becomes a calming response.
1. Six-element melodic contrast table (typical A→sabi development)
Reversing any single element produces contrast; reversing multiple elements at once = strong contrast (suited to entering the sabi), while reversing a single element = weak contrast (suited to small changes within a section):

- The trick for choosing contrasting material: grab the most characteristic element of the previous section's opening (出だし) and reverse it. Example: if the A section's signature is "anacrusis + repeated notes + low narrow range," contrast the sabi with "strong-beat start + big leap + high wide range." Prioritizing the character of each phrase group's opening is a universal technique for making the construction clear.
- "Different motion ≠ audible contrast": motion that differs but shares the same kind of character (all eighth notes, narrow range, stepwise) sounds like "more of the same continuing" — for quiet sections this is actually an appropriate sense of unity.
- Clear contrast requires the nature of the motion to differ conspicuously: stepwise ↔ leaping, short values ↔ long values, on-beat ↔ syncopated, multiple elements reversed at once.

Using a typical pops instrumentation (drums, bass, acoustic guitar [アコギ], electric guitar [エレキ], piano) as an example:

3. Complementary "yokuyō" (抑揚, dynamic inflection) between singer and arrangement
- A singer with little inflection (flat delivery) → an arrangement with lots of inflection (many notes, but also plenty of space) supplements the dynamics, and listeners can still comfortably "follow the vocal with their ears."
- A singer with rich inflection (strong expressiveness) → an arrangement with little inflection to foreground the vocal (e.g., accompaniment of just one acoustic guitar).
- Both pushing forward in sync is the pops royal road, but done too conventionally it loses freshness and jumps into the brutal competition of "whose playing is more dazzling" — deliberate "offset complementarity" is a differentiation strategy.
IV. Sabi Design and Maximization
1. Why the sabi sounds like the sabi
- Basic principle: sabi = the most exalted point of the song and the place in the lyrics where the message most needs to be delivered.
- Melodic curve: A sung low → B rising gradually → the sabi leaps to a high position and stays there. In a typically structured song you can tell where the sabi is even a cappella.
- The accompaniment follows the song's curve:
- Vertical axis (thickness): A is thin and soft; the sabi is strong enough not to lose to a full-voiced vocal, using the entire range from low to high.
- Horizontal axis (time density): A centers on quarter/eighth notes; the sabi adds sixteenth-note phrases to raise density.
- Detail: when the sabi melody rises and falls, the descending parts of the melody are easily buried by the accompaniment — deliberately leave gaps in the accompaniment at those spots.
- If the sabi's repetitions all end the same way and lack variety, lift the final repetition's ending to a higher register to push the climax.
2. First-aid kit for "a sabi that doesn't lift"
- The vocal can't go higher → stack high-register instruments, but don't bury the vocal: tuck the high notes into the vocal's gaps.
- Add low-register instruments and rhythm-playing instruments to raise density.
- The ultimate secret weapon = "the voice": add harmony (ハーモニー) or "aah"/"ooh"/"hah"-style chorus vocals (コーラス), and the sabi instantly sounds like a sabi.
- The energy efficiency of the human voice is roughly 3 times that of instruments — the exaltation that instruments achieve only with great effort, voices achieve with ease.
- Trivia: the etymology of the English word "chorus" for the sabi = everyone singing together at the biggest climax.
3. Sabi maximization strategy A: exposure
People grow attached to what they hear repeatedly; the first strategy is to have the sabi heard as many times as possible:
- Open with atama-sabi (頭サビ / いきなりサビ);
- Compress interludes and hirauta (平歌, verses) as much as possible;
- Stack up 1-sabi, 2-sabi, 3-sabi, 4-sabi;
- In the final setsu, A−B−C−C(−C−C): repeat the sabi many times to create the whole song's grand climax.
But "the whole song is sabi" gets tiresome — pops arranging = the game of "how to get people to hear the sabi as much as possible without boring them" (too little sabi and it's not memorable; too much and it palls).
Anti-boredom devices:
- The same sabi melody with a changed arrangement: the 3rd sabi suddenly turns quiet as an ochi-sabi (落ちサビ); the atama-sabi uses an opening-appropriate arrangement (thin accompaniment, slow tempo, rubato = narration-style lead-in, or performed as-is = dazzling opening).
- Modulation (転調): with the same instrumentation, avoid monotony through key changes.
4. Sabi maximization strategy B: anticipation
The section directly before the sabi matters most. Rather than sliding lazily into the sabi, creating a change just before entry grips the ear far better:
- A sudden full stop (break, ブレイク) followed by a "bang" into the sabi;
- A small twist added to the chords;
- A simple eighth-note crescendo (クレシェンド);
- A drum fill before the sabi — for listeners who know the song, emotion rises in advance with the fill.
The essence of all of these is creating the anticipation of "来るぞ来るぞ" ("here it comes, here it comes").
Caution: the sabi's arrangement should of course be attractive, but if the hirauta lacks equal appeal, listeners will never last until the sabi.
5. Internal structure of the sabi
- The sabi, as a phrase group, still obeys the "2/3–3/4 point" rule for its internal climax.
- Even if the sabi opens at a high pitch of excitement, guard against ryūtō-dabi (竜頭蛇尾, dragon's head, snake's tail — a strong start that fizzles) — check whether the second half still has a full climax and whether it can close substantially ("部分動機を繰り返してだれないように再度盛り上げ" — repeat the partial motif and build up again so it doesn't sag).
- Two ways to make a Chorus:
- The catchphrase type built on short-motif repetition (common in rock; memorized in one listen);
- The long-melody "utai-ageru" (歌い上げる, full-voiced soaring) type — the original meaning of the Japanese word "sabi" (the melo = sabi form), common in Japanese pop and ballads.
- The motif constructions best suited to the sabi (see the table in Section VI): a a b a (final recapitulation, strong sense of satisfaction), a b a c (a grabs attention, c carries the big climax).
- Ochi-sabi / grand-betrayal field example (ballad): after the 2nd-ban sabi the second half's accompaniment is made completely full → listeners expect the 3rd-ban to also come crashing in → instead they get only a whispered sabi of piano + vocal → 2 or 4 bars later the band crashes in all at once — extremely moving.
6. Design points for the ō-sabi (大サビ, C-melo)
- Its role is a "ところで" ("by the way") aside or a "だけど" ("but...") alternate viewpoint, giving the song layered depth.
- Often an introspective, subdued melody; in uptempo songs the note values are often stretched so that it sounds as if only this section has dropped into half time.
- Reference techniques: static pitch motion + modulation + harmony built mainly on minor-third-related chords, creating a subdued character.
- Because its function is that of a "verse," it is always followed by a sabi; once the mood has calmed, the climax of the following sabi lands all the more impressively.
- The ō-sabi is not mandatory: an ō-sabi added merely out of habit actually weakens the song's momentum — first confirm whether the sabi repetitions of each setsu genuinely feel predictable (予定調和), then decide whether to add it.
V. Hooks / Catchiness Techniques
Catchy (キャッチー) = easy to remember (覚えやすい). Easy to remember = simple, but simple easily becomes monotonous; the key is how to bring "simplicity" to life.
1. Static melody, moving bass (arrangement-as-composition)
- "One Note Samba": the A section's melody is essentially a single G, while the bass descends chromatically each time, E→E♭→D→D♭ — a melody note of identical absolute pitch changes its "relative meaning" with the bass, making even one note catchy.
- Prince, "Die For You": the melody rests on D while the bass walks G→D/F#→A (up a 5th, down a 4th).
- "She" (Aznavour): the same phrase sung 3 times in a row, with the bass varying by minor-third ascent and chromatic descent, giving the identical melody a different "color" each time.
- Conclusion: when the melody is static, let the bass (harmony) move — the fundamental technique of "creating catchiness through arrangement"; arranging that changes a note's relative meaning is practically composition itself.
2. Sound-logo thinking (CM-style minimal hooks)
- A sound logo (サウンドロゴ) = making a name memorable with as few notes as possible, and having it stay in the ear without being unpleasant.
- Catchy vs. not catchy: a melody with contour and undulation vs. repeated notes in a low, flat register (a bland impression).
- Key points: commit to simplicity (シンプル); make a melody people "can't help humming."
- Midway through production you will doubt yourself, feeling it's too simple and childish — trust your melody and see it through; once the accompaniment is added it will stand up.
- Professional requirement: be able to fit a chorus into 15/30 seconds (catchy CM jingles are all "sabi-style climaxes" that open the piece directly).
3. Motif-ization and riffs (hooks at the arrangement level)
- Technique A: motif-ize the sabi melody — use the sabi melody as the intro melody so the very first moment grabs the listener.
- Ikimonogakari, "Arigatō" (ありがとう): the intro piano = the sabi's opening, motif-ized.
- Ken Hirai, "Itsuka Hanareru Hi ga Kite mo" (いつか離れる日が来ても): the vocal melody used verbatim as the intro; "Canvas" (キャンバス): the intro taken from the hottest part of the D-melo.

- Queen, "Another One Bites the Dust": the bass riff is so catchy that the vocal melody is written hugging it; Michael Jackson, "Bad": intro orchestral hits + a catchy bass phrase.
- MC Hammer, "U Can't Touch This": the sampled guitar riff is itself the hook — the DJ/track-maker instinct for spotting "the catchy bit" is worth studying; Shanice, "I Love Your Smile": an intro riff catchy enough to overshadow the vocal melody, yet the song was a major hit.
- Technique C: the sound itself as the hook — timbral hooks (e.g., Perfume's electro sound); subject to the fashions of the era, with no universality.
- Trend-sensitivity ranking: mix > arrangement > composition; the song itself has the most universality.
- Break + vocal hook: the full band suddenly stops before the chorus, and the first few syllables of the vocal (e.g., "ki, mi, no,") become the hook, followed by a thunderous re-entry.
4. "Hikkakari" (引っかかり, snags/hooks) at the melody-craft level
- An impressive single phrase (印象的なワンフレーズ): make a partial motif of 2–3 notes heard impressionistically — ear-catching motions such as non-chord-tone resolutions or interval leaps; syncopated rhythms; rhythms matched to lyrics containing sokuon (っ, glottal stop), chōon (ー, long vowel), or hatsuon (ん, syllabic n).
- Use it at the song's opening to grab attention, or in the sabi to turn the theme words into a catchphrase.
- Distortion must have an answer: nothing but smoothness (スムーズ) is boring; there should be a seemingly "いびつ" (warped, distorted) spot that stirs up waves — but the distortion must be backed by an "answer": a moving resolution after a run of unstable notes; an interval leap that ignores pitch-accent is actually an expression of intense emotion. Only with an answer does the listener build the trust that "this song is worth listening to," and gain the patience to sit through flat phrases.
VI. Climax and Ending
1. Rules for climax (クライマックス) placement
- Every divisional block (motif / phrase group / setsu) should have a peak of emotion and expression.
- Position: usually at the 2/3–3/4 point of the division, just before the phrase's resolving note — consistent with golden-ratio aesthetics and the kishōtenketsu construction.
- There are also types where the climax comes at the opening of the division (soaring lead-ins, the top of the B section in ternary form).
- The size and length of a climax are proportional to the size of the block it belongs to; the nesting runs level by level: a peak note within the motif → the phrase group's climax lands on some motif → the setsu's climax is an entire phrase group = the sabi.
- Correction method when the climax feels thin: change only the ending — add a descending close after the peak, enlarge the phrase's resolution, revise the phrase group's closing part — and the climax becomes clear, preventing shirisubomi (尻すぼみ, petering out) and flatness.
- Two master questions of construction design: (1) how many sections, and which one carries the climax; (2) through what ladder of characters do we reach the climax.
2. The four principles of construction (the underlying engine of section logic)
All relationships between sections are woven from four principles — "melody, in the extreme, is the craft of weaving repetition and contrast at various intensities":
- Principle of response (応答の原理): given two divisions, the listener understands the latter as a reaction to the former — the minimal engine of construction.
- The response can echo with a similar phrase, answer with a contrasting phrase, or put "the answer first" (the stable form comes first, and the following phrase sounds like a question).
- Responses run on multiple levels simultaneously: a motif responds both to the immediately preceding motif and to the whole preceding phrase group.
- Principle of repetition (反復の原理): response with the same nature of motion. It binds phrases strongly together and unifies a phrase group into one mood; overuse makes it monotonous and lets the development be read in advance.
- Each element can be judged separately: rhythm repeated + pitch contrasted, or pitch repeated + rhythm contrasted, are both normal.
- Strong repetition (many shared elements, little variation): 2 times is the limit; weak repetition (e.g., only the rhythm pattern repeats) can exceed 4 times.
- Principle of contrast (対照の原理): response with a different nature of motion — still vs. moving, bright vs. dark ("salt after sweet") — mutually highlighting each other, producing tension and undulation.
- Suited to large phrase-group-level sections (entering the sabi); used in a chain, it meanders and loses direction.
- "Contrast with repetition" (the intermediate state) combines the strengths of both; adjusting the strength ratio is the core craft.
- Principle of continuation (継続の原理) + shiritori (しりとり, word-chain) response: use the final note of the previous phrase as the first note of the next, connecting smoothly without relying on repetition or contrast; its cohesion is weak, so pair it with repetition/contrast.
- Principle of recapitulation (再現の原理): repetition of a phrase separated by a great distance (a phrase group or more). The effect is like "the protagonist returning from a journey" — the same phrase seems to have changed character; it has the settling persuasiveness of "腑に落ちる" (things falling into place), and belongs at the end (A−x−x−A).
3. Quick reference for sectional construction principles
- Single-section construction (conclusion loop): pillar = the principle of repetition.
A(−A−A……). Strongly bodily/narrative; used in dance music and counting songs.
- Binary construction (introduction − conclusion): pillar = the principle of response, the most basic construction.
A−B, with the climax in the latter section (B = sabi).
- Two types of ternary construction:
- Type 1: a−a′−b (onset − development − resolution, the stable type) or a−b−c (onset − another viewpoint − integrated resolution) = the Japanese A−B−sabi construction; the climax, as in binary construction, falls in the third section.
- Type 2: a−b−a′ (ternary form, principle of recapitulation): the climax is in the middle section B; B must be more emotional and differ in mood from the outer sections; the final section usually adds slight variation to gain a sense of closure.
- Four sections or more = compounds of binary/ternary constructions; if all motifs differ it is hard to cohere, so usually some motifs are kept the same.
- Kishōtenketsu (起承転結): ki = lead-in; shō = repetition establishing stability; ten = a great contrast that transforms the mood in one stroke and creates the climax; ketsu = closure. Corresponds to A−A′−B−A or A−A′−B−C.
- Jo-ha-kyū (序破急, focused on time and speed): jo = slow lead-in; ha = the climactic part where rhythm and groove become distinct; kyū = a brisk close.
- All of the above are typical paradigms, not absolute rules.

5. The 8-level openness ladder of endings (from closed to open)
Three dimensions — closing note × chord × beat position — where swapping out any one item lowers the degree of closure and raises the forward pull:
- Tonic note + tonic chord + strong beat (most closed)
- Tonic note + tonic chord + weak beat (suspension, 繋留)
- Third of the scale + tonic chord + strong beat
- Third of the scale + tonic chord + weak beat (suspension)
- Tonic note + non-tonic chord + strong beat
- Tonic note + non-tonic chord + weak beat (suspension)
- Leading tone + dominant chord + strong beat
- Leading tone + dominant chord + weak beat (anticipation) — most open, connecting powerfully to what follows through tension
Usage:
- Closed ending: the melody shuts firmly. At the setsu level = one drama told to full satisfaction; at the phrase-group level = the next phrase group "begins its telling anew."
- Open ending: leaves a "deficiency" that opens toward what follows. At the setsu level = afterglow, lingering feeling (余韻・余情), room for imagination; at the phrase-group level = the next phrase group "carries the sentence onward."
- Related: the six factors of sectional division (for judging how strong the sense of division is) — long note value / rest > leap > repetition of motion > clear ending > clear beginning > repetition-contrast (the last two are recognized retrospectively); divisions of 2/4/8 bars are the easiest to grasp; a strong division opens a new section (use sparingly mid-setsu), a weak division preserves continuity.
6. Ending toolbox
- Closing phrase (終結フレーズ): when closure is insufficient, add one phrase to end firmly — especially effective for the ternary form where "the end of the setsu = recapitulation of the first phrase group."
- Variant 1: simply repeat the final 2 bars once ("念押し," a sense of driving the point home).
- Variant 2: repetition + augmented note values — extremely strong closure, but easily comes across as nagging (しつこい).
- Reverse operations (afterglow family):
- When closure is already sufficient, deliberately add a short phrase with an incomplete cadence to leave afterglow;
- Omit the melody's closing note and cut the closing chord along with it — maximum afterglow;
- Let only the harmony cadence while the melody sustains without landing — "never finishing the sentence, even at the end";
- Cut the ending and charge straight into the next phrase group — prevents dragging (ダレる) but sounds impatient.
- Kime (キメ):
- A distinctly flag-planting phrase of about 2 bars appended to the end of the sabi, with the accompaniment stopping abruptly or playing a signature rhythm, stacking one more climax at the very end;
- The lyrics use the song's theme phrase or an emblematic word;
- It can be built by varying a partial motif of the sabi itself (stronger unity);
- Kime expanded to a full phrase group = that setsu effectively has two Choruses (A−B−C−D, where D = kime = chorus);
- When the melody feels lacking in dynamic contrast (メリハリ), consider adding a kime first.
- Four coda types:
- Grand-finale type (大団円型): an expansive (おおらか) melody builds one more climax — "one more sabi at the very end of the song"; often paired with a pre-coda modulation that raises the register and highlights the climax that follows;
- Sabi/kime repetition doubling as the coda (optionally + modulation up a key);
- Calming type: rubato / ritardando (rit., slowing down), descent through a low, narrow range, reduced harmonic motion, "引き伸ばしてしみじみと終止" (stretch it out and close with deep feeling);
- A-melo recapitulation type: repeat the song's opening phrase group at a slower tempo with thin accompaniment — the principle of recapitulation yields deep dramatic weight and a restrained ending.
- Three whole-song ending approaches:
- End directly at the setsu's close (may repeat the final phrase group / repeat the sabi multiple times to finish; can also instrumental-ize it with a different melody as the outro);
VII. Intro, Interlude, Outro, Vamp
Intro (イントロ)
- Function: signal the song's mood (ムード) and lead the listener in smoothly — either beginning the tale quietly from the everyday, or extending a grand invitation in one sweep of splendor.
- There are no rules for intros; the only standard is "make people want to hear the next phrase." "Rules" like "intros should open quietly" are merely defensive reasoning — learn the formulas first, then break them.
- Four formulas:
- Borrow from the A-melo: intro = A's chords + rhythm (only the vocal is added when A begins);
- Borrow from the A-melo: intro = A's chords, with the rhythm entering later (at A, melody and rhythm enter together);
- Borrow from the sabi: over the sabi's chord progression, have an instrument play a melody different from the sabi;
- Independent material: use entirely new material for the intro, and have the interlude "bring it back" for front-to-back cohesion.
- Intro = the instrumental-ization of a lead-in section / atama-sabi — when those sections already exist in the song, the intro is often absent or extremely short; the instrumental passage after an atama-sabi is in substance the intro leading to the verse.
- No intro: the song's opening can feel abrupt, but an anacrusis melody entering with a bare voice is intensely "生々しい" (raw, vivid) — deliberately seeking this effect is common.
- Idea list for memorable intros (common thread = drawing the listener onward through strangeness or suspense): a cappella opening / percussion whose tempo can't be discerned / an intro that feels oddly familiar / approaching footsteps / dissonant string tremolo / a Clavinet that sounds like a human voice / a sudden classical piano inside a dance track / two snare hits and the song starts / 8 bars of drums only / clapping drawing closer / a roar of distortion / only a speaking voice over a chord progression / a heartbeat keeping time.
Interlude (間奏)
- Function: prevent the monotony of continuous vocals and re-raise anticipation for the next setsu; if the previous setsu ended "open," receive its openness; rest the ears, preserve the sabi's afterglow, lighten the singer's load.
- Methods: replay the intro as-is / simplified / intensified (the Second Introduction); or instrumental-ize the setsu's final phrase group and repeat it; add instruments one by one and lay modulation chords as the run-up to the next section.
- In ternary form, when A appears too many times in a row, omit the 2nd setsu's first A: A−B−A−A(interlude)−B−A.
- Convention: the later in the song, the longer the interlude (short between setsu 1–2, long between setsu 2–3).
Outro / kōsō (アウトロ/後奏)
- Receives the final setsu and prepares the whole song's termination; you can make a grand climax at the close, or go the opposite way and settle into a quiet ending.
- Kōsō = the instrumental-ization of the coda: reuse the Chorus's harmonic progression and similar devices.
- After the outro you can still append a sung coda: ……A−B−C−outro−coda.
Vamp (ヴァンプ)
- A section in the intro/interlude etc. that plays no instrumental melody, only presenting the rhythm pattern.
- It can be percussion only, or add bass, guitar, and other chordal instruments.
- A staple of club music (for DJ mixing) and of long lead-ins.
VIII. Avoiding Yoteichōwa (予定調和, Predictable Harmony / Cliché Checklist)
Yoteichōwa (everything unfolding exactly as expected) is the problem to guard against most in construction: repetition provides a stable structure, but if the next step is too easily predicted by the listener, it fails to hold interest.
- Omit repetitions: after the 1st setsu A−A′−B−C, listeners can already predict — change the 2nd setsu to A−B−C; start the 3rd setsu straight from the sabi. Systematically omit in the song's second half.
- Beware motif transposition-on-rails: a construction that merely shifts the motif's pitch in parallel with the harmony (each bar starting on the chord's third, etc.) is seen through by the third chord.
- Exploit expectation and turn the tables (裏切り, betrayal): first lure the listener into forming an expectation, then betray it — on the third occurrence of a transposed motif, deliberately begin from the "readable" note, then veer sharply away, staging the climax through surprise.
- Break (ブレイク): stop the whole accompaniment leaving only the vocal, usually right before the sabi's entrance or where the intro ends and the vocal begins, so the next section sounds fresh.
- Advanced: insert a tiny break at an "impossible position" in coordination with the lyrics to spotlight a key word — big surprise but high risk; done badly it's just awkward. Not a universal technique.
- Modulation (転調): a song that has been climbing from B goes up a key at the sabi — surprise and lift doubled; the keys are making the modulation feel natural, and how to return to the original key afterward; a pre-coda modulation is likewise common.
- Reharmonization-style reversal: insert a diminished chord (ディミニッシュ) as a passing sonority — a momentarily unstable harmony creating an "おや?" ("huh?").
- Repetition-count discipline: strong repetition is best kept within 2 times — the 1st time "there is repetition" is recognized, the 2nd time "the repetition is continuing," and from the 3rd time on the listener's interest begins draining away; you must introduce variation/development; weak repetition (e.g., only the rhythm pattern repeats while other elements vary) can exceed 4 times without palling.
- Keep materials few and organic: new phrases appearing one after another → diffuse and homeless, a scattered impression. When introducing new material, be clear about "how it differs from what came before" — not every element contrasts; some elements are always continuing in repetition. A piece built from as few materials as possible is easier to understand and more moving.
- Lengthen the melodic line: a long-arc melody is both expansive (のびやか) and naturally avoids the cliché of motif repetition; but it needs a sense of direction — anticipations linking identical rhythm shapes, a large dip into the low register, a smooth reverse ascent building the climax, pitch repetition stabilizing the center of gravity, a chromatic strong appoggiatura creating a second climax, an unhurried close — otherwise it is just ダラダラ (dragging on).
IX. Workflow: From Conception to Complete Song
1. Conceive the whole before crafting the details
- Waiting for inspiration to "descend" section by section leads to deadlock: writing the opening is complete freedom; the second section is constrained by the first; the third by both … the further you go, the less you can do.
- Typical symptoms: "a gripping opening + a fizzling second half," "the opening comes easily but nothing follows, so the song is shelved."
- The partial fragment that surfaces first is by no means bad — it is precisely the driving force of composition; you simply must soon afterward answer: where does this song go from here? Through what development toward what climax? What is the whole song's theme? What about the lead-in section?
- In practice, the song often develops in unexpected directions and clashes with the initial conception — at that point you should trust your musical instincts and revise the conception. "Constructing the piece" and "the content being polished" proceeding in parallel is exactly the deep pleasure (醍醐味) of composition.
2. Two starting paths (appendix: practical workflows)
Starting from "a phrase came to mind first" (three typical workflows):
- A. First develop the phrase into a phrase group → set the whole song's theme/construction/range → make the remaining phrase groups and revise the original one → add ō-sabi/intro/ending.
- B. From the phrase's impression, first conceive the whole song → develop the phrase into a phrase group according to the overall construction → make the remaining phrase groups → fill in and finish.
- C. Intermediate form: phrase → small phrase group → set the whole → small phrase group → phrase group → remaining phrase groups → fill in and finish.
- Interrogate the melodic fragment: what is its character? Is it a sabi or a lead-in? Trying to fit lyrics to it is a good clue for judging its character.
- If it's a lead-in: how does the telling begin, and where must it resolve to?
- If it's a sabi: how is it to be led up to? A straight push, one cushion (ワンクッション) in between, or an unexpected development?
Starting from "a whole-song conception" (two entrances):
- The construction idea itself ("I thought of a dramatic modulation!" "Instruments enter one by one toward a grand climax") → set theme/construction/range → consider each phrase group's character per the construction → build the phrase group containing that idea first.
- Emotion/theme as the starting point ("I want to write this moment's particular sadness"; a commission requires a specific mood) → first build the phrase group that chiefly carries that emotion (usually the sabi or the lead-in), then shuttle back and forth adjusting it into a setsu.
3. Narrative order (plot thinking)
- Conceiving a piece is not just setting a theme, but also deciding from what standpoint and in what order to tell it — the equivalent of a film's or novel's plot (プロット).
- The same breakup song: reveal it at the start? Disclose it midway? Only become clear at the end? Or merely hint at it to the last? — these choices are tightly bound to the song's structure and mood.
- Person also matters: singing as oneself / singing as a general statement / singing in character — the same melody yields different effects: soliloquy, explanation, spoken lines (セリフ).
- A wide-range, full-voiced sabi heard in isolation sounds affected; it must be the result of meticulous preparation from the opening onward, emotion piled layer upon layer, to evoke great emotion — every form is, in essence, "a scheme for deriving the sabi."
4. Timing of the lyrics
- The ideal is conceiving words and music together; failing that, shuttle back and forth polishing words and music against each other (行きつ戻りつ).
- Music first: pre-imagine the words for key positions — the melody's opening, the sabi's kime, etc. (single words suffice), exploiting the phonetic effects of sokuon (っ), hatsuon (ん), etc. — a melody taking shape "moth-eaten" with scattered words already in place is a common practice.
- Lyrics first: first divide which part becomes the A-melo and which the sabi; give the words you want to spotlight long note values, high pitches, or the kime position.
5. Global parameter check
- Translate mood into concrete parameters: tempo, rhythm pattern (リズムパターン), key/mode, degree of functional-harmony usage, degree of tension-note stacking (テンション), whether to use a drum kit — these in turn change the melodies you write.
- Three elements of the sense of speed: BPM × meter (4-beat family = walking in a straight line / 3-beat family = swinging on a swing) × groove (ストレート straight / 3連系 triplet-based / ハネ系 shuffle・swing bounce). At the same BPM, bounce-family grooves feel faster; if you keep writing similar-sounding songs, change the combination of these three first.
- Prefer "repetition" over new elements when expanding: before A−B−C → A−B−C−D, first consider repeating phrase groups.
- Empty space is also design: the unsung parts produce afterglow and lingering feeling (余韻・余情); where the melody leaves space, the listener's attention shifts to the accompaniment's rhythm and harmony; the pre-sabi build can be handed to the accompaniment and interlude — the melody need not carry it all.
- Subject matter: "extraordinary yet relatable": the subject must be an event/emotion everyone has experienced (otherwise no empathy is possible), while the "manner of telling" must be one of a kind; private imagery communicates only by borrowing shared associations.
6. Final checklist
- Are the hirauta and the sabi equally attractive? (If the hirauta has no appeal, listeners won't last until the sabi.)
- Does each section's contrast seize the characteristic elements of the previous section's opening (出だし)?
- Does the climax at each level fall at the 2/3–3/4 point? Does the sabi's second half fizzle (竜頭蛇尾)?
- Does the ending's openness (8 levels) match the aftertaste you want to leave?
- From the 2nd setsu on, have you made omissions to avoid being predicted? Is the ō-sabi truly needed, or merely habitual?
- Does any strong repetition exceed 2 times without variation? Are there too many materials, scattering the impression?
- A 3-minute song consumes 3 minutes of the listener's life — make every moment substantial, and let them finish feeling they've had a good experience.
