Core Concepts

Best Practices Summary

1. Always use context managers - For any resource that needs cleanup

Gotchas

• with open() inside a generator: file closes when the generator is GC'd, not at end of iteration — fine in CPython (reference counting), risky in PyPy/IronPython.
• ExitStack: enter_context for __enter__/__exit__ protocol; push for cleanup-only callbacks — mixing them with mistaken ordering can swallow exceptions in the cleanup chain.
• Async context managers MUST use async with — with on an async manager silently returns the coroutine, no cleanup runs.
• tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile on Windows can't be reopened while open — delete=False + explicit cleanup is the cross-platform path.
• contextlib.suppress(Exception) swallows including KeyboardInterrupt if you pass BaseException — be specific about what's suppressed.
