| description | Use this skill when diagnosing or building positioning for interior decorators, interior designers, spatial studios, architecture-adjacent studios, staging brands, furniture/decor showrooms, luxury home stylists, or gallery-like spatial brands. Activated by "brand audit", "position this interior designer", "make this decorator feel premium", "brand world", "perception gap", "founder lore", "premium signal", or "why does this design site feel generic". Do NOT use for backend/API/security/database work or for visual execution without positioning evidence. |
Brand Strategy
WHEN TO USE THIS
- Load before spatial storytelling when the brand's category, audience, price signal, taste world, or authority is unclear.
- Load for redesigns where the current site feels like a decorator template instead of a premium spatial point of view.
- Load when the visual system needs proof-backed positioning, not just mood.
NEVER DO
- Never confuse brand with logo, palette, or "luxury" adjectives.
- Never invent premium signals the studio cannot support with work, process, proof, or restraint.
- Never accept "interior designer" as enough positioning.
- Never let founder biography replace founder authority.
- Never diagnose visuals before naming the perception gap.
DIAGNOSTIC ORDER
- Evidence inventory and provenance.
- Perception gap.
- Taste world.
- Audience and desired identity.
- Founder/creative authority.
- Enemy and category rejection.
- Signature method/language.
- Proof architecture.
- Premium signal and inquiry posture.
- Creative-brief constraints and selection criteria.
EVIDENCE DISCIPLINE
Before diagnosis, catalog what is actually available: current website, social presence, recent projects, photography and video, service and process language, testimonials, press, founder communication, inquiry flow, technical constraints, and missing evidence.
For every important claim, label it as one of:
- Fact - directly observed and citeable.
- Reported - supplied by the studio but not independently demonstrated.
- Inference - a reasoned interpretation of evidence.
- Unknown - material information still missing.
Record source, date or recency when known, and confidence. Do not promote an inference into brand truth simply because it sounds strategically useful.
PERCEPTION GAP
Answer with evidence:
- What category does the current site signal: decorator, stylist, contractor, lifestyle blogger, luxury studio, retail showroom, architecture-adjacent practice?
- What price level does it imply?
- What taste world does it imply?
- What client type does it attract or repel?
- What feels generic, underpriced, overdesigned, or untrustworthy?
- What would a smart affluent visitor misunderstand?
Diagnosis format:
The brand wants to be perceived as [desired spatial authority], but the current footprint feels like [current category] because [specific evidence].
TASTE WORLD
Name the world using concrete spatial language:
- quiet collected residence
- layered art-led home
- sculptural warm minimalism
- heritage renovation with restraint
- hospitality-grade private home
- family sanctuary with polish
- material-led modern craft
- gallery-like residential curation
Define what belongs and what never belongs:
- Materials.
- Light.
- Furniture/object language.
- Photography style.
- Typography posture.
- UI restraint.
- Motion tolerance.
- Inquiry tone.
ENEMY AND COUNTER-STANDARD
Choose the rejected world:
| Enemy | Meaning |
|---|
| Template Decor | Beige, serif, stock room, generic fade-ups |
| Pinterest Taste | Trend aggregation without authority |
| Contractor Utility | Practical but no atmosphere or curation |
| Lifestyle Blogger | Personality without proof of spatial control |
| Retail Showroom | Product display before transformation |
| Overdesigned Spectacle | Motion that outshouts the work |
Counter-standard format:
The old world says [false belief]. This studio believes [new standard]. That means the site must show [proof] through [spatial behavior].
PREMIUM SIGNALS
Premium signals for this niche:
- Fewer, stronger projects shown with context.
- Before/after transformations with decision captions.
- Material and sourcing specificity.
- Quiet confident inquiry flow.
- Press/client proof presented without logo clutter.
- Project constraints and decisions made visible.
- Strong photography curation and crop discipline.
- Restraint in UI chrome.
Premium leaks:
- Low-contrast ghost buttons.
- Generic service cards.
- Too many equal projects above the fold.
- Stock imagery that could belong to any designer.
- Copy saying "bespoke/elevated/timeless" without evidence.
- Inquiry forms that feel like lead-gen funnels.
CREATIVE-BRIEF HANDOFF
Translate positioning into constraints and criteria, not a selected visual concept:
- What visitors should feel, understand, believe, and do.
- What the studio must be known for first.
- Required proof and the burden it must carry.
- Taste patterns and category conventions to use, bend, or reject.
- Typography posture.
- Image crop rules.
- UI visibility level.
- Proof format.
- Motion restraint.
- Asset, accessibility, performance, and maintenance constraints.
- Anti-goals and concept-selection criteria.
These are inputs to concept exploration. Do not select the hero, page sequence, palette, anchor object, animation, or motion archetype during diagnosis. Do not output abstract adjectives without observable constraints.
For color palette selection and color psychology decisions, load the color-system skill.
OUTPUT SHAPE
Evidence contribution: Provenance ledger -> facts -> inferences -> unknowns -> coverage gaps.
Brand diagnostic: Perception gap -> taste world -> enemy -> proof architecture -> premium leaks -> creative constraints.
Creative-brief handoff: Desired perception -> visitor response -> first-known priority -> proof burden -> anti-goals -> selection criteria.
NON-NEGOTIABLE CHECKLIST
- Evidence is separated into fact, reported claim, inference, and unknown.
- Perception gap is evidence-based.
- Taste world is concrete and spatial.
- Enemy is named.
- Premium signals and leaks are specific to interior/spatial brands.
- The handoff defines constraints and selection criteria without prescribing a concept.
- No generic premium adjectives stand alone.
