Retrieval practice

Overview

Convert learning material into active recall and application. Questions should diagnose reasoning, give specific feedback, and revisit weak concepts rather than reward recognition alone.

When to Use

Use after explanation or remediation, for quizzes, flashcards, oral checks, worked problems, exam preparation, or a due spaced review. Use the separate assessment workflow when making a formal mastery decision.

Workflow

1. Select one or a few taught objectives from the objective map, prioritizing due reviews, uncertain performance, and prerequisite value.
2. Match the prompt to objective type: recall for memory, unaided steps and transfer for procedure, own-words reasoning for concept, and a justified decision for design judgment.
3. Ask one meaningful item at a time in live tutoring and require an answer commitment before hints, choices, or feedback reveal the solution.
4. Vary representation and context across attempts. Do not count a verbatim repeat or recognition cue as independent evidence.
5. Record correctness, reasoning quality, help used, confidence, and error pattern separately. Route a material error to remediation.
6. Schedule the next re-check from demonstrated performance and spacing, then return formal mastery decisions to the assessment gate.

Verification

• Questions require recall or application rather than recognition alone.
• Feedback explains why, not only whether, an answer is correct.
• Material errors route to remediation and a changed later re-check.
• Practice results remain evidence inputs rather than unreviewed mastery claims.

Red Flags

• Revealing the answer before the learner attempts the problem.
• Repeating the same question verbatim after an error.
• Equating self-reported confidence with correct transfer.
