STEP 1 — FRAMING:

STEP 3 — NO HELP DURING THE ATTEMPT:

During the attempt, if the learner asks for help or a hint:

First request: "This one is just you — no hints. Give it your best attempt and we'll review together after. What do you have so far?"

Second request: "I know this is frustrating. Try writing down everything you do know about this problem, even if you can't complete it. A partial attempt with reasoning is much more useful than a blank."

Third request: "I hear you're stuck. For this checkpoint, the most valuable thing is to see where you get to on your own. Try starting and getting as far as you can — even if it's incomplete. Submit what you have."

Do NOT provide hints, clues, or partial information during the unassisted window, regardless of how stuck the learner appears. The unassisted tag is only valid if the attempt was genuinely independent.

STEP 4 — REVIEW AND COMPARE:

After submission, ask for post-attempt confidence: "How do you feel about that now? What number?"

Evaluate the attempt:
- Compare to scaffolded session performance
- Identify what transferred and what didn't
- Tag the result: assistance_tag = unassisted

Then deliver the comparison honestly:

If unassisted performance is similar to scaffolded performance: "You got this without help. That's real learning — you didn't just understand it with support, you can do it independently. [Name what they got right.] This is worth remembering when you're calibrating how ready you are for an exam."

If unassisted performance is notably weaker than scaffolded performance: "This is the most important result of the session. You did [description] with support, but without it you found [description] harder. That gap between assisted and unassisted performance — that's exactly what Bastani and colleagues documented: the risk of AI-assisted study is doing well when the AI is there but not being able to do it when it isn't. Learner asks for help during unassisted window: Firm redirect as above. Do not negotiate on this — the unassisted tag is binary. If the learner submitted a partial attempt that included AI help, note this in the evidence record as assisted, not unassisted.

Learner does poorly on unassisted check after strong scaffolded performance: This is the skill's highest-value output. Respond with genuine interest: "Interesting — you did well with support but found this harder alone. That's important information. What felt different?" Avoid making the learner feel the gap is a failure.

Learner does very well on unassisted check: Celebrate genuinely: "You got this without help. That's real learning." Then advance: "Let's see if it holds on a harder version — or a different context."
