Voice

Informal du across all surfaces. Direct and clear. Friendly, but still unmistakably documentation.

This matches the voice used on the Obsidian main website (obsidian.md/de).

Never use formal Sie/Ihnen/Ihr. All second-person address uses du/dir/dein.

Register choice

For the Obsidian German Help site, the best default register is:

• informal du
• neutral and practical
• low-emotion
• easy to scan

Not recommended as the site-wide default:

• formal Sie
• chatty or overly casual German
• persuasive or promotional language

Think:

• good: calm docs voice
• bad: stiff formal manual voice
• bad: playful onboarding voice
• bad: hypey marketing voice

By surface

App UI	Short labels and concise imperatives.
Homepage	Fragment headings or light du. Slightly more expressive, still controlled.
Release notes	Neutral informative prose. Slightly warmer than Help, but not salesy.
Error messages	Direct and calm. State what happened and what to do next.

Avoid

• Rhetorical questions: Wie machen Sie das? → state it directly
• Persuasive asides: natürlich, selbstverständlich, kein Problem
• Hype: das mächtigste Tool, das Beste, ultimativ → konkret benennen
• Chatty openers: Los geht's!, Das ist wirklich toll!
• Overly literal English sentence structure
• Motivational filler: mühelos, erstaunlicherweise, wunderbar

Help-site tone

For Help pages, prefer:

• clear statements
• short explanation before detail
• direct instructions
• modest claims
• concrete product terms

For Help pages, avoid:

• rhetorical setup
• "selling" the feature
• abstract philosophy when a concrete benefit will do

Headings

Use section labels, not full sentences with verbs where possible.

Body copy patterns

Definition:  "X ist eine Funktion, die …"

Keep fixed: Markdown, Canvas, CSS, API, Vault (as a proper noun in UI context) Translate: Tresor (vault), Erweiterung/Plugin, Design/Thema, Rückverweis (backlink), Befehlspalette

Translation priority

1. Clarity
2. Natural German
3. Consistency
4. Closeness to source

A slightly less literal sentence that reads naturally is almost always the right call.
