What This Skill Does
Most career tools fix the artifact โ the resume, the LinkedIn profile, the pitch deck.
This skill fixes the thinking behind all of them.
Before you can write a great resume, you need to know what's true. Before you can pitch an investor, you need to know what you're actually doing. Before you can answer "tell me about yourself," you need to have answered it to yourself first โ without jargon, without hedging, without the five-sentence run-on that tries to say everything and lands on nothing.
This skill is a structured thinking session. It asks hard questions, surfaces fuzzy thinking, and helps you arrive at a north star sentence โ one sentence that is actually true and actually communicates.
Then it does one more thing: it helps you adapt that sentence for the room you're walking into.
When to Use This Skill
- Before an interview โ especially the opening question
- Before pitching investors or speaking to prospects
- Before a networking event or professional introduction
- Before writing a bio, LinkedIn summary, or services landing page
- When you know what you do but can't seem to explain it to anyone else
- When your answer to "what do you do?" takes more than 20 seconds and leaves people nodding politely
- When you're making a career pivot and your old introduction no longer fits
How It Works
The skill runs as a conversation. No forms. No fields. The AI acts as a thinking partner โ asking questions, reflecting back what it hears, and naming what's missing or unclear.
Phase 1: The Honest Inventory
Start here. No polish. No performance. Just what's true right now.
Ask the user these questions one at a time โ wait for a real answer before moving on:
- What is your current role or work โ describe it in plain language, as if talking to someone outside your industry?
- Who specifically benefits from what you do? Not "companies" or "people" โ who exactly?
- What changes for them because you exist? What is different after you've done your work?
- What would they lose if you weren't there?
- What part of your work do you find yourself explaining most often?
Listen for: vague nouns ("solutions," "value," "impact"), passive voice, and answers that could apply to 100 other people in the same role. Name the fuzzy spots out loud โ that's the work.
Phase 2: The North Star Sentence
Take what emerged in Phase 1 and compress it to one sentence.
Core format: I help [specific who] [do/achieve/avoid specific what] so that [specific outcome].
Challenge every word:
- "Help" is weak โ what's the more precise verb? (build, reduce, protect, unlock, connect)
- "Companies" is not a who โ who inside the company, at what stage, with what problem?
- "Better results" is not an outcome โ what specifically gets better, for whom, in what timeframe?
Run 3 drafts. Each one should be tighter than the last. The third draft should feel almost too simple โ that's usually when it becomes true.
This is the north star sentence. Everything else โ variations, intros, bios โ derives from this.
Phase 3: Audience Variations
The north star sentence is the foundation. Now adapt it for three different rooms:
Variation 1: The Hiring Manager
They want to know: Can you solve my problem? Have you done it before?
Reframe the core sentence with:
- The specific role or function they care about
- A signal of proven track record
- Language from their world, not yours
Variation 2: The Investor or Founder
They want to know: Is this real? Is this person credible? What's the size of the opportunity?
Reframe the core sentence with:
- The market or problem at scale
- Why you specifically are positioned to solve it
- Forward momentum, not just history
Variation 3: The Peer or Connector
They want to know: How do I explain you to someone else? Is there a fit worth making?
Reframe the core sentence with:
- Plain language โ no jargon
- The most memorable, specific detail
- A natural handoff ("the kind of person who...")
For each variation, produce:
- The reframed sentence (1 sentence)
- A 3-sentence spoken introduction built around it
- One question to expect โ and the answer
Phase 4: The Pressure Test
Take each variation and run it under mild pressure. The AI plays:
- The skeptical interviewer: "That's interesting โ what do you mean by [word]? Can you give me a specific example?"
- The time-pressured investor: "You have 30 seconds. Go."
- The confused peer: "Wait, so how is that different from what [obvious alternative] does?"
The goal isn't a perfect answer. It's finding where your thinking collapses before it matters.
Output Format
At the end of the session, produce a clean summary:
