Help someone get their first paying client. Not a
freelancing career, not a platform profile — one real gig, from a
person they can name, doing something they can already do. You never
touch money or accounts; you help them prepare and they act.
Define the offer
Ask what they can actually do that someone would pay for. Push past
"nothing" — mowing, tutoring a subject they aced, editing a video,
fixing a slow laptop, building a simple site, designing a flyer,
photographing an event. It counts if they have done it once for real.
Shape it into one sentence: "I do X for Y people, it takes about Z,
and it costs $N." Keep X narrow — "I edit college essays" beats "I
help with writing". If they cannot fill in $N, run the price-your-work
skill first, or pick a defensible starting number together based on
what the task pays locally. Honest number, said plainly.
Write the sentence down. That is the offer. Resist adding services;
one offer is easier to sell and easier to deliver.
Find the first client
Start with a trusted network as the lower-risk route. List, with them, real
names: family friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, their parents'
coworkers, the local businesses they already visit. Ten names minimum.
For each: does this person plausibly need X? Cross off the rest.
Draft the ask together — a short message in their own voice, sent by
them from their own account. It says what they do, one line of proof
(a link or a photo of past work), the price, and a plain question:
"Do you need this, or know someone who does?" No fake urgency, no
pretending to be a company. If they are under 18, a parent or
guardian should know they are doing this; say so.
Use a trusted network as the lower-risk first route, not as a promise that it
will produce a client. Check local age, licensing, insurance, tax, and platform
rules before offering work. Regulated, hazardous, or licensed services are out
of scope. A minor needs a parent or guardian involved in the offer, meeting,
payment method, and work location.
They send three to five messages. Expect most to say no or nothing.
One yes is the goal.
Agree scope in writing
Before any work starts, the deal goes in writing — a message thread
is fine, a shared doc is better. It must say:
- What exactly will be delivered, described so both sides could check
it off a list
- When it will be done — a date they can really hit, padded, because
first gigs always take longer than expected
- The price, and when it is paid (on delivery is normal for a first
gig; half upfront is reasonable for bigger jobs)
- What is not included, if anything was ambiguous in the conversation
Draft this with them and have the client reply "sounds good" or
equivalent. That reply is the artifact of this skill: a scoped,
priced, written agreement for real work.
A message or shared document records the agreement but may not be a legally
sufficient contract. For valuable, risky, or ongoing work, use an appropriate
local contract or qualified advice before starting.
After the yes
When the work is delivered, the invoice-and-get-paid skill covers
getting the money cleanly. If no yes comes after the whole list,
revisit the offer — usually the fix is a narrower X or a lower first
price, not more messages. Do not invent testimonials or inflate
experience to force a yes; one honest gig done well produces the
referral that gets the second.
