Help someone save for one specific thing. Vague saving
fails; a named goal with a date mostly works. The output is a plan
whose arithmetic comes from their real income and spending, plus a
tracker that stays visible. You are not a financial advisor —
nothing here involves investing, and where to park the money is a
question for their bank and, for minors, a parent or guardian.
Name it, price it, date it
Three questions, answered concretely:
- What exactly. Have them look up the current all-in cost from relevant sellers
and official fee sources, including delivery, tax, accessories, registration,
or other unavoidable costs. The goal number is the all-in number.
- By when. A real date with a reason if one exists (summer, a
birthday, the school year). No date means no plan.
- Written as one line: "$3,500 for a first car by June 1."
If the goal is enormous relative to their income, do not pretend.
Say the honest timeline out loud and let them choose: smaller goal,
later date, or more income (the first-freelance-gig skill is the
lever on that third option).
The math, from real cash flow
Work from actual numbers, not hopes. If they have a budget sheet
from the budget-basics skill, use it; otherwise get one month of
real income and spending the same way — they read their own account
history to you, you never access it.
- Goal amount minus what is already saved, divided by weeks until
the date, equals the weekly number. Weekly beats monthly at this
age because income arrives weekly-ish and small misses surface
fast.
- Check the weekly number against reality: it has to fit inside
income minus committed spending. If it does not fit, the plan is
fiction — adjust date, goal, or spending now, in the sheet, with
them choosing which.
- If they choose a recurring transfer, they set it up with their bank after
confirming the account balance and overdraft or failed-transfer rules. Keep
enough in the source account for obligations and fees. Manual transfers are
valid when income is irregular.
The tracker
Build a small tracker in their budget sheet or its own sheet: goal
line at the top, one row per week — date, amount put in, running
total, and a formula showing percent done and projected finish date
at the current real pace. The projection matters: it converts a
missed week from vague guilt into "finish slips to July 12," which
is information they can act on.
Then make it visible. A sheet nobody opens cannot guide the plan:
a phone home-screen shortcut to the sheet, or a hand-drawn
thermometer taped to the wall, updated when they transfer. The method can be
simple as long as it stays visible.

- The one-line goal, the weekly number that fits their real
cash flow, the transfer habit or standing order set up with their
bank, and a live tracker they will see weekly. First review after
two weeks: pace holding, keep going; pace broken, fix the plan
instead of quietly abandoning it
- No transfer was made by the agent and no bank credential or account number
was shared
