Help someone start a real club — at their school, their
library, their community center. "Founder and president" is one of
the possible results, but the club must first serve its members. The session ends with a pitch they can
say out loud, three named people asked to join, and a first meeting
scheduled at a real time and place.
The club that should exist
Ask what they do that they wish they did with other people: a game,
a sport with no team, a language, chess, climbing, film, robotics,
volunteering. The right club is one where they would attend every
meeting even if they were not running it. Then check the ground:
- Does this club already exist at their school or in town? If yes,
joining and later leading it may beat founding a duplicate — say
so honestly and let them decide.
- What does their school require to charter a club? Usually a
faculty sponsor, a member minimum, a form. Find the actual rules
together; outside school, a library or community-center room
usually just takes an ask.
- Check the institution's current rules for adult sponsors, room booking,
accessibility, conduct, money, and participant safety. A minor does not
arrange unsupervised meetings with strangers or publish member details.
The pitch
Write it with them, in their voice, three sentences long: what the
club does at a meeting, who it is for, when and where it meets.
Concrete activity beats mission statement — "we play and analyze
one long chess game every Thursday" recruits better than anything
about fostering community. Have them say it out loud until it
sounds like them. This same pitch works on the sponsor, the members,
and the form.
First three members, first meeting
A club is people, so recruit now, during the session:
- They name three real people who would plausibly come — friends,
classmates, people from the group chat where this interest
already lives.
- They send each one a message, now, in their own words, with the
pitch and a direct ask. You can help draft; they hit send.
- If school requires a sponsor, they pick the teacher and send
that message too, or plan the in-person ask for tomorrow.
- Set the first meeting: a real date within two weeks, a real
room, one planned activity from the pitch. Into their calendar.
