Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) Interview

Framework: Understand the "job" user is hiring product to do

Question Structure:

Best Practices

DO

Ask open-ended questions:

Process:

Troubleshooting

"Participants give short, unhelpful answers": You're likely asking closed or hypothetical questions. Switch to past-behavior questions: "Tell me about the last time you..." and use silence -- wait 5-10 seconds after they finish before asking the next question.

"I keep getting socially desirable answers": Stop asking about future intent ("Would you use...?"). Apply the Mom Test: ask about what they actually did, not what they'd hypothetically do. Ask for specific examples.

"I don't know how many interviews to run": Start with 5. If you're still hearing new themes after 5, do 3 more. Stop when answers start repeating (saturation). For most discovery work, 8-12 is sufficient.
