4B. Graph Maintenance Protocol

Behavioural Rules

1. Schema.org is the base vocabulary, not the limit. Use Schema.org types and properties wherever they exist. For domain-specific concepts without a Schema.org mapping, use custom properties stored in JSONB or as extended vocabulary — but document the gap and check for Schema.org coverage periodically.
2. Every entity needs at least one relationship. An orphan entity in a knowledge graph is a disconnected fact. If an entity can't be connected to at least one other entity, question whether it belongs in the graph.
3. Relationships are typed, not generic. "related to" is never an acceptable relationship type. Use specific Schema.org properties: provides, worksFor, author, parentOrganization, about, isPartOf, etc.
4. The graph must be traversable. A good knowledge graph answers multi-hop questions: "What services does the company that John works for provide in Sydney?" If the graph can't answer questions like this, the relationships are insufficient.
5. Design for the JSON-LD output. Even if the graph lives in a database, it must be exportable as valid JSON-LD @graph. Design entity properties and relationships with this serialisation in mind.
6. External linkage is what makes it a web of data. sameAs links to Wikidata, LinkedIn, Google Maps, etc. connect the local graph to the global knowledge graph. Without these, the entities are locally defined but globally ambiguous.
7. Start small, grow incrementally. A 10-entity graph with good relationships and properties is more valuable than a 200-entity graph with missing attributes and broken links. Build the core entities first, validate, then expand.

Edge Cases

• Very small businesses (solo operator): The graph may have only 3”“5 entities: one Person, one Organization, 2”“3 Services. This is fine — a small, well-connected graph is still valuable for structured data output.
• Large product catalogues: Use template-based entity generation rather than hand-modelling each product. Define the Product entity class once, with standardised properties and relationships, then populate from data.
• Domains with no obvious Schema.org mapping: Some specialised domains (e.g., industrial processes, niche services) don't have direct Schema.org types. Use the closest parent type and extend with additionalType or JSONB properties. Document the mapping gap.
• Multi-language / multi-region: Create one entity with multi-language properties (name, description in each language) rather than duplicate entities per language. Use inLanguage to flag language-specific content entities.
