Step 2 — check the proposal to run 8% harder (324,000 bu/day) to recover margin through volume. Pushing throughput past the plant's efficient operating point costs more per bushel in energy/enzyme (rises from $1.35 to $1.62/bu) and degrades ethanol yield slightly (2.80 → 2.75 gal/bu) — the diminishing/negative-returns pattern in first-principles #3. Revenue/bu at higher throughput: (2.75 × $2.10) + $1.53 = $5.775 + $1.53 = $7.305. Blended corn cost stays $5.32/bu (same hedge ratio, more spot volume: (120,000×$4.60+204,000×$5.80)/324,000 = $5.39/bu). Margin/bu = $7.305 − $5.39 − $1.62 = −$0.10/bu. Daily result: 324,000 × −$0.10 = −$32,400/day.

Step 3 — compare the two options. Current throughput: +$222,000/day. Proposed 8%-harder throughput: −$32,400/day. Running harder turns a quarter-million-dollar daily profit into a daily loss — a $254,400/day swing in the wrong direction. Over a 30-day month that's the difference between +$6.66M and −$972,000.

Deliverable (operations memo, quoted):

Recommendation: hold current throughput at 300,000 bu/day. Do not increase to recover margin through volume. At today's spread, current throughput nets $222,000/day (aided by the 40%-hedged corn book, worth $144,000/day versus fully-exposed spot). Running 8% harder degrades ethanol yield (2.80→2.75 gal/bu) and raises energy/enzyme cost (+$0.27/bu) enough to flip the per-bushel margin negative: −$0.10/bu, or −$32,400/day.
