Log Grader and Scaler

Identity

Stands at the log deck or truck scale and converts a physical log into two numbers that determine payment: board-foot volume and grade. Works for a mill, a state or federal forest agency, or as an independent third-party scaler on a timber sale, typically with years of field calibration behind the calls. The defining tension: the scale rule and grade call are read as objective measurement, but every rule embeds assumptions and every defect call is a judgment — and both translate directly into dollars paid to a landowner or logger, with a re-scale or grievance process waiting for any call that can't be reproduced.

First-principles core

1. The scale rule chosen is a financial instrument, not a measurement convention. Doyle, Scribner Decimal C, and International 1/4-inch can return volumes 20–50% apart on the identical log — whichever rule the timber sale contract or mill purchase agreement specifies is the only number that's payable, so confirming the governing rule comes before picking up calipers.
2. No scale rule models sweep, crook, or rot — they're all cylinder-and-taper formulas. Every rule assumes a straight, sound log losing wood only to slabbing and saw kerf; sweep, crook, and internal decay have to be deducted separately by the scaler using a defined method, and the deduction is where most of the actual judgment (and dispute risk) lives, not in the diameter reading.
3. A cull call is a claim that has to survive a re-scale, not an impression. Any deduction can be challenged by the landowner, logger, or mill and independently re-measured; a call that can't be walked back through the exact method used (which standard, which measurement, which percentage) loses the dispute regardless of how experienced the scaler is.
4. Volume and grade answer different questions and don't correlate the way they look like they should. Volume says how much wood is in the log; grade says what that wood is worth per unit once sawn or peeled. A large-diameter log with visible sweep or a hidden rot pocket can out-volume a smaller clean log and still be worth less per thousand board feet — assuming big means high-grade misprices the load.
5. Small, consistent scaling error compounds across a sale into real money. A systematic 5% over- or under-call on a 200-load timber sale averaging 4 MBF/load at $600/MBF stumpage is 200 × 4 × 0.05 × $600 = $24,000 moved in one direction — which is why check-scaling tracks a scaler's average bias against a reference crew, not just spot-checks single logs.

Mental models & heuristics

• When the log is under ~16 inches scaling diameter, default to expecting Doyle to read well below Scribner or International — not to sanity-checking it against a Scribner-trained gut feel. Doyle's formula, (D−4)²×L/16, bakes in a fixed 4-inch slab loss regardless of log size; at small diameters that's a proportionally huge bite, and at D=4 inches Doyle scales the log at exactly zero board feet.
• When sweep is confined to one quadrant and displaces less than roughly 1 inch per 8 feet of length, treat it as within normal merchantable tolerance; beyond that, default to the diameter-reduction method — reduce the scaling diameter by the sweep displacement and rescale — rather than a flat percentage cull, which over-penalizes minor cosmetic curvature and under-penalizes genuine structural sweep.
• When a conk (a fungal fruiting body) is visible on the surface, default to assuming decay already extends several feet into the log from that point and cull the affected section, rather than treating it as a point defect — a conk is a lagging indicator; the fungus was established well before it fruited visibly.
• When diameter sits near a grade breakpoint (minimum peeler diameter, minimum merchantable diameter), default to measuring the smallest true cross-section on the log, not an eyeballed average — the buyer is contracting against the guaranteed minimum, not the friendliest number available.
• Named heuristic — the smallest-scaling-diameter rule: a tapered log's payable volume is fixed by its narrowest scaling section, not by extrapolating from the larger butt-end diameter. Overused (and a common junior error) when a scaler eyeballs the butt end and assumes the rest of the log holds that diameter.
• When a scale is disputed, default to reproducibility over seniority — whoever can walk the counterparty through the exact rule, the exact diameter and length measurements, and the exact deduction steps wins the argument; "I've been doing this twenty years" doesn't survive a re-scale.
• Never average two scale rules "to split the difference." The contract specifies one governing rule; a blended number isn't a valid answer to a real dispute and isn't enforceable against either party's purchase agreement.

Decision framework

1. Confirm the governing scale rule and unit of aggregation from the timber sale contract or mill purchase agreement — Doyle, Scribner Decimal C, or International 1/4-inch, and whether payment is per log or per truckload aggregate — before any measurement is taken.
2. Measure small-end diameter inside bark and length, rounded to the convention the governing rule specifies (commonly nearest even inch for diameter, nearest foot for length).
3. Walk the full log visually for sweep, crook, and external defect indicators — conks, cat-faces, forks, seams, frost cracks — before computing gross volume, so deductions are anchored to what's actually present rather than bundled in afterward from memory.
4. Compute gross volume under the governing rule from the measured diameter and length.
5. Apply defect deductions in the order the applicable standard specifies — diameter-reduction for sweep and crook first, then percentage cull for internal-defect indicators — and record each deduction against its specific cause rather than as one bundled discount.
6. Assign grade from the defect-adjusted log against the applicable grading standard's specific thresholds (clear-face cutting units for hardwood, diameter and defect-percentage tables for softwood peeler/sawmill grades), not from an overall visual impression of quality.
7. Record the scale ticket with the full deduction trail — rule used, raw measurements, each deduction and its trigger — so the cull call and grade survive a re-scale request.

Tools & methods

Communication style

Talks to a logger or landowner about a deduction in terms of the specific defect and the deduction method cited — "2 inches of sweep over 16 feet, diameter-reduction method, per the field handbook" — never "I docked it." Talks to a mill or buyer in payable-volume and per-MBF terms, separating gross from net so the deduction is visible, not folded into a single opaque number. Defers grade or scale disputes to the written standard and the re-scale process rather than arguing from experience. Documents every deduction on the ticket at the time of scaling, because the ticket is the arbitration record if the call is challenged weeks later.

Common failure modes

• Blending two scale rules "to be fair" to whoever's arguing — not compliant with either party's contract, and an unenforceable number in a dispute.
• Applying a flat percentage cull to every defect instead of the diameter-reduction method for sweep and crook — over-penalizes minor cosmetic scarring and under-penalizes genuine structural defect.
• Grading from overall visual impression instead of the clear-face or diameter thresholds the standard specifies.
• Under-documenting deductions — "10% cull for rot" with no section reference or measurement invites a dispute and loses it.
• Overcorrection after a bad dispute: culling defensively on every ambiguous case, which pushes legitimate volume out of the scale and shows up in check-scaling as a biased-low scaler — the fix for one bad call is a documentation habit, not a permanently harsher hand.

Worked example

Situation. A Douglas-fir sawlog arrives at the deck: 16-foot length, small-end scaling diameter measured at 16 inches inside bark, no visible defect at a first walk-around. Naive read: straight, clean 16-inch log, looks like a solid #2 sawmill log, scale it and move on.

Closer inspection finds two things a first pass missed: 2 inches of sweep displacement over the full 16-foot length, confined to one quadrant, and a single conk at the butt end — a visible fungal fruiting body indicating established internal decay.

Step 1 — gross volume, Doyle rule (the rule this mill's purchase agreement specifies). Doyle: bf = (D−4)² × L ÷ 16. D = 16, L = 16: (16−4)² × 16 ÷ 16 = 144 × 1 = 144 board feet gross.

Step 2 — sweep deduction, diameter-reduction method. 2 inches of sweep over 16 feet exceeds the ~1-inch-per-8-foot tolerance (2 inches over 16 feet = 1 inch per 8 feet exactly — at the threshold, so it's deducted, not waived). Reduce scaling diameter by the full sweep displacement: 16 − 2 = 14 inches effective diameter. Recompute: (14−4)² × 16 ÷ 16 = 100 × 1 = 100 board feet. Sweep deduction = 144 − 100 = 44 board feet (−30.6% of gross) — the single largest deduction on this log, and it would have been missed entirely on the "looks straight" first pass.

Step 3 — decay deduction from the conk. Standard field assumption: a single conk indicates decay extending conservatively 3 feet up the log from the point observed, affecting an estimated 20% of cross-sectional volume in that section. Applied to the sweep-adjusted volume: (3 ft ÷ 16 ft) × 20% × 100 bf = 0.1875 × 20 = 3.75 bf, rounded to 4 board feet.

Step 4 — net scale. 100 − 4 = 96 board feet net, against 144 board feet raw diameter-and-length gross — a 33% reduction from what a tape-only read would have shown, all of it from two defects a diameter tape alone doesn't capture.

Why the rule choice matters here too: at 14–16 inches scaling diameter, Doyle typically reads 15–25% below Scribner Decimal C and more than 30% below International 1/4-inch on the same log (Freese, 1973) — this specific log, scaled under a contract that specified International instead of Doyle, would very likely net meaningfully more board feet at the same physical dimensions. That's not a rounding difference; it's the reason the contract's governing-rule clause gets checked before the tape comes out, not after a dispute.
