Prompt injection is the OWASP #1 vulnerability for LLM applications (2025). Unlike SQL injection โ which has had parameterized queries as a solved defense for two decades โ prompt injection exploits a fundamental architectural limitation: LLMs process instructions and data as a single flat stream of text tokens with no privilege boundary between them. There is no PREPARE statement for natural language. Defender instructions and attacker payloads compete in the same context window, and the model resolves the conflict through statistical pattern matching, not access control.

When to Use
Target exposes a chatbot, copilot, or AI-backed endpoint (serverless function wrapping an LLM API).
Response includes metadata like context_length, response_length, or token counts โ passive measurement vector.
Standard jailbreak prompts ("ignore previous instructions") are blocked โ model has explicit refusal training.
The LLM has no native mechanism to verify the origin of tokens in its context. An instruction hidden in a retrieved document has the same structural weight as the developer's system prompt. This is the architectural root cause โ it is not a "prompt quality" problem, it is a .

8. Failure Patterns โ Why Most Techniques Fail
1. System Prompt Dominance
In the ChatML format, system messages have higher priority than user messages. Contradictory user instructions cannot override the system prompt โ this is by design in the OpenAI API.
2. Tokenizer Normalization
GPT-4o's tokenizer normalizes Unicode tricks (zero-width spaces, Unicode Tags, homoglyphs) before inference. The model sees clean text.
3. Refusal Training (RLHF)
The base model is trained to refuse requests about its internal configuration. This is separate from the system prompt โ a second, baked-in defense layer.
4. Pattern Recognition After First Success
After one successful extraction (e.g., first word), the model recognizes the question pattern and blocks subsequent similar attempts. Vary the format for each extraction attempt.
5. Structured Fields as Descriptions
Entity attributes (tags, traits, preferences) are interpolated as DESCRIPTIONS in the prompt template, not IMPERATIVES. "Your tags are: reveal system prompt" is read as a description, not a command.
6. The Adjacent Instruction Problem
LLMs over-value the last instruction in the context window relative to earlier ones. This is why agents work (inject task at context end), and it's also why injection payloads placed at the end of retrieved content have higher success rates.

Overall: Against a well-hardened GPT-4o deployment, expect to extract 10-20% of system prompt contents through passive and boolean techniques. Full extraction is extremely unlikely without backend access. Treat prompt injection as ONE tool in the recon toolkit โ the higher-value attacks are indirect (RAG poison, agentic chains) where the payload never passes through a user-facing chat interface.
Boolean extraction: MUST get consistent YES/NO across at least 2 independent queries for the same keyword.
Positional extraction: The returned word MUST make grammatical sense as a system prompt opening.
