Topps Chrome Grading Quirks

Chrome amplifies surface flaws. Factory centering shift is the norm. Adjust expectations down half a grade vs paper cards.

Common Chrome defects

1. Factory centering shift (2-3mm typical)
2. Print lines visible on foil/refractor
3. Holo bleed onto white border (NOT penalized)
4. Corner whitening on black-border parallels
5. Roller marks on the foil — wavy fan patterns

Color refractor hierarchy

From least scarce to most: Base → Refractor → Gold (/50) → Orange (/25) → Red (/5) → Superfractor (1/1). Grade penalty escalates with rarity because of higher resale stakes.

When to grade Chrome

Submit only if:

1. Centering ≥ 55/45 on both axes
2. No visible scratches at 30° light
3. All 4 corners razor-sharp under 10×
4. Comp data shows clean PSA 10 > 2× raw value

Most raw Chrome grades 8 or 9. Be selective.
