Tablet design is often the forgotten middle. Don't just scale desktop or phone.

Layout opportunities

Touch targets

Same as phone — 44px minimum. Tablet users often have thumbs at edges, not center.

Orientation

Some apps lock portrait. Most should support both. Test landscape — many designs break.

When tablet = small desktop

For productivity apps, tablet behaves like a small laptop. Use desktop layouts.

When tablet = big phone

For consumer apps, tablet behaves like a phone. Use phone layouts at larger scale.

Common mistakes

Stretched phone layouts (waste of width). No landscape support. Touch targets too small. Sidebar on tablet portrait crowds content.
