Hazmat Incident Response Procedures

Incident response is hazmat-specific.

Immediate (driver)

1. Stop in safest location
2. Secure vehicle
3. Don PPE
4. Refer to shipping paper + ERG
5. Call 911
6. Call CHEMTREC (or shipper's emergency number)
7. Contact carrier dispatch
8. Evacuate as needed

Carrier follow-up

• Document everything (photos, statements)
• Notify insurance
• Notify PHMSA per 49 CFR 171.15/16 timeline
• File Form 5800.1 within 30 days
• Internal investigation

Training

Drivers practice scenarios. Tabletop exercises. Update procedures based on incidents.
