Implementing API Security Posture Management

Overview

API Security Posture Management (API-SPM) provides continuous visibility into an organization's API attack surface by automatically discovering, classifying, and risk-scoring all APIs including internal, external, partner, and shadow endpoints. Unlike point-in-time testing tools, API-SPM operates continuously to detect configuration drift, policy violations, missing security controls, sensitive data exposure, and compliance gaps. It aggregates findings from DAST, SAST, SCA, and runtime monitoring tools to provide a unified view of API risk posture across the organization.

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

• Discovery gaps create a false "0 shadow": if the inventory only ingests gateway logs, APIs outside the gateway are invisible and risk looks artificially clean - feed traffic, code/CI, and cloud sources too.
• Stale inventory: point-in-time scans miss drift; run continuously and age out last_seen.
• Auth detection by header presence: assuming "Authorization header seen = authenticated" misses unauthenticated paths on the same endpoint.
• Risk scoring that ignores data sensitivity: an endpoint handling PII/PCI must outrank a static one regardless of control count.
• Policy scope errors: policies scoped to "external" silently skip mislabeled shadow/internal APIs.

How to verify it works: register a known undocumented endpoint and confirm it appears as shadow with elevated risk; seed a response with PII and confirm sensitive-data classification fires; deploy an endpoint missing auth/TLS and confirm the policy flags it; compare inventory counts against an independent discovery scan to measure coverage; re-run after a config change to confirm drift is detected.
