Performing API Fuzzing with RESTler

When to Use

• Performing automated security testing of REST APIs using their OpenAPI/Swagger specifications
• Discovering bugs that only manifest through specific sequences of API calls (stateful testing)
• Finding 500 Internal Server Error responses that indicate unhandled exceptions or crash conditions
• Testing API input validation by fuzzing parameters with malformed, boundary, and injection payloads
• Running continuous security regression testing in CI/CD pipelines for API changes

Do not use against production environments without explicit authorization and monitoring. RESTler creates and deletes resources aggressively during fuzzing.

Most Often Missed & How to Confirm

• Auth-refresh failures = silent unauthenticated fuzzing: if token_refresh_cmd breaks mid-run, RESTler fuzzes as anonymous and "finds nothing" - verify the auth header is live before trusting a clean run.
• Stateful sequences over single requests: the highest-value bugs (use-after-free, cross-tenant access) only appear in producer→consumer chains; don't stop at fuzz-lean's single pass.
• Custom dictionary injection: seed dict.json with SQLi/SSRF/path-traversal/oversized values and per-resource restler_custom_payload IDs - the default dictionary rarely triggers app-specific bugs.
• Checkers that get skipped: explicitly enable NamespaceRule (cross-tenant), UseAfterFree, and PayloadBody - they are off in lean mode.
• Uncovered endpoints: dependency-resolution failures leave endpoints untested and falsely "clean."

How to confirm a hit (avoid false negatives): 500s with stack traces, NamespaceRule/UseAfterFree bug buckets, and a deleted resource still returning 200 are real hits - reproduce them manually outside RESTler to rule out garbage-collection race noise. Don't conclude negative until you've checked coverage (covered vs total endpoints), confirmed auth was valid for the whole run, added app-specific payloads, and run full fuzz (not just lean) on the highest-bug services.

Prerequisites

• Written authorization specifying the target API and acceptable testing scope

Scenario: Microservice API Fuzzing Campaign

Context: A fintech company has 12 microservice APIs with OpenAPI specifications. Before a major release, the security team runs RESTler fuzzing against each service in the staging environment to catch bugs.

Approach:

1. Collect OpenAPI specs for all 12 services and compile each into a RESTler grammar
2. Configure authentication for each service with service-specific credentials
