Do not use for non-Azure workload protection exclusively (use AWS Security Hub or GCP SCC), for application-level security testing (use Azure DevOps DAST/SAST), or for identity-specific protection (use Microsoft Defender for Identity).
Common Misconfigurations & Verification
Plans left on the Free tier: the Free tier only delivers CSPM recommendations — no workload threat alerts. Each plan (VirtualMachines, Containers, StorageAccounts, SqlServers, KeyVaults) must be Standard. Check: az security pricing list --query "[?pricingTier!='Standard'].name" (should be empty for protected workloads).
Auto-provisioning off: without the Log Analytics / Defender agents, VMs generate no recommendations or alerts. Confirm az security auto-provisioning-setting show --name default returns autoProvision: On and az security workspace-setting list points at the intended workspace.
Defender for Servers P1 vs P2 confusion: P1 lacks JIT, FIM, and adaptive application controls. If those features are required, the subplan must be P2 (--subplan P2).
Workflow automation never fires: the automation ruleSets propertyJPath/expectedValue must match the alert schema (e.g. Severity == "High") and the target Logic App must be enabled, or High alerts are silently dropped.
No continuous export: findings won't reach Sentinel/SIEM unless an export rule exists (az security setting list).
