Detection Gaps & Validation
Static analysis of a packed sample describes the packer, not the malware. A UPX/Themida/VMProtect binary shows a tiny import table (often just LoadLibrary/GetProcAddress), high .text entropy, and a near-empty string list. Treat "few imports + entropy >7.0" as packed, not benign — unpack (memory dump after OEP) before drawing capability conclusions from the IAT.
The IAT lies when imports are resolved dynamically. Malware that builds API addresses via hashing or GetProcAddress at runtime shows none of the injection/network APIs in PEStudio. Absence of VirtualAllocEx/WriteProcessMemory does not mean no injection — look for the hashing stub or analyze dynamically.
The #1 missed hiding spots: overlay data appended after the last section (carve from end-of-image to EOF), high-entropy resources containing an embedded PE (MZ at start of a .rsrc blob), and Authenticode signatures that are present but invalid/stolen.
Strings traps: ASCII-only strings misses UTF-16LE C2/paths, and obfuscated/stack strings need FLOSS — a "clean" strings run is not exoneration.
Confirm cross-tool: corroborate PEStudio indicators with pefile/Detect It Easy (packer ID) and a VirusTotal hash lookup, and never call a packed sample benign on imports alone — escalate to sandbox/Ghidra.
Benign-lookalike FPs: legitimate installers and protected commercial software are also packed with few imports and high entropy; a forged-looking compile timestamp can be genuine. Verify against signing, vendor, and behavior before flagging.
