Performing Malware IOC Extraction

Overview

Malware IOC extraction is the process of analyzing malicious software to identify actionable indicators of compromise including file hashes, network indicators (C2 domains, IP addresses, URLs), registry modifications, mutex names, embedded strings, and behavioral artifacts. This skill covers static analysis with PE parsing and string extraction, dynamic analysis with sandbox detonation, automated IOC extraction using tools like YARA, and formatting results as STIX 2.1 indicators for sharing.

Detection Gaps & Validation

Packing hides everything: static string/PE extraction yields almost nothing on packed, encrypted, or .NET-obfuscated samples - high section entropy (>7.0) is the tell. Unpack (sandbox dump, manual OEP dump) before extracting, or you report the packer's strings, not the payload's, and wrongly conclude "no IOCs" on a live threat.
Static misses runtime IOCs: C2 assembled from string fragments, resolved via DGA, or fetched from a dead-drop resolver never appears as a literal string. Pair static extraction with dynamic detonation and memory scanning to recover config/C2.
Regex false positives: the IP/domain/URL patterns match benign noise - Microsoft/Windows telemetry domains, version strings that look like IPs, analysis-VM artifacts, and library URLs. Filter against an allowlist and reserved ranges (RFC1918 is handled, but also exclude *.microsoft.com, schemas.xmlsoap.org, etc.) before promoting to a blockable IOC.
How to confirm an extracted IOC: validate before sharing - resolve the domain/IP, check VirusTotal/passive DNS for malicious association, and confirm the string is actually referenced by code (xref) rather than left over from a statically linked library. Set realistic STIX valid_from/confidence; an unvalidated extracted string is context, not a high-confidence indicator.
