Turn a product, object, material, photograph, event, or idea into an original quiet-living visual. The skill uses restrained natural color, functional hierarchy, honest material evidence, and generous asymmetric whitespace without copying MUJI branding or recognizable campaigns.
It is a decision system rather than a beige filter. Each run chooses a composition from the content, assigns one material anchor, resolves every visual choice, and checks the result against a concrete quality gate.
> **Quiet does not mean empty.** It means every object, word, color, and gap has a reason to remain.
## The system
| System | Direction |
|---|---|
| **Input** | A product, object, material, photograph, event, daily action, or concept |
| **Composition** | Selected from seven content-led families rather than one fixed minimal template |
| **Palette** | Material-derived off-white, warm gray, sand, natural brown, charcoal, and optional muted red |
| **Space** | 50%–75% empty in image-led work; 35%–55% in information-led work |
| **Image** | Natural light, soft shadows, tactile evidence, moderate depth of field, and minimal retouching |
| **Type** | Neutral sans serif, clear hierarchy, left alignment, and no decorative filler |
| **Output** | Generated raster image, production-ready prompt, and a one-line visual recipe |
## Composition families
| 01–04 | 05–07 |
|---|---|
| **Small-object field** · one useful object, 55%–75% empty space<br><br>**Quiet information grid** · factual content, 2–3 columns<br><br>**Observed-life crop** · supplied photography as evidence<br><br>**Material study** · fibers, grain, glaze, wear | **Editorial pause** · one phrase, one small visual cue<br><br>**Useful line drawing** · only details that explain the action<br><br>**Domestic still life** · one subject, no more than two supports |
## Workflow
| Step | Decision | Result |
|:---:|---|---|
| **01** | Read the input | Subject, purpose, audience, exact text |
| **02** | Choose the layout | One of seven composition families |
| **03** | Anchor the material | Paper, wood, cloth, clay, glass, or metal |
| **04** | Compose the silence | Numeric subject size, margins, empty space |
| **05** | Add one human trace | One sign of handling, use, repair, or action |
| **06** | Generate and inspect | Function, hierarchy, evidence, originality |
## Visual rules
1. **Function comes first.** Communicate the purpose before the style.
2. **Material colors lead.** Every visible color belongs to a physical surface, text role, or believable shadow.
3. **Silence is measured.** Empty space follows a numeric range and controls sequence rather than surrounding a centered object.
4. **One material anchors the image.** Fibers, grain, glaze, transparency, or wear replace generic texture overlays.
5. **One human trace is enough.** Use exactly one concrete sign of handling, use, repair, or present action.
6. **Every choice is resolved.** The final prompt contains one crop, position, light direction, material, and trace.
7. **Originality is structural.** No MUJI wordmark, red brand block, packaging system, product code, campaign copy, or recognizable composition is reproduced.
## Not this
- not a beige filter or a centered object on an empty background every time
- not glossy e-commerce photography or luxury-product lighting
- not a card grid, decorative badge system, gradient, or 3D composition
- not a prop-heavy lifestyle scene or perfect showroom arrangement
- not kawaii illustration, sticker clusters, mascots, or ornamental doodles
- not a reconstruction of MUJI branding, packaging, advertising, or store design
## Install
```bash
git clone https://github.com/yanliudesign/muji-style-skill.git \
```
Restart Claude Code after installation. Other agent environments can load [`SKILL.md`](./SKILL.md) as the skill entry point.
## Try it

<summary><strong>Objects & materials</strong> — product study and tactile evidence</summary>
### Product study
```text
Use muji-style-skill to create a 3:4 product poster for a daily-used white ceramic mug with slightly uneven glaze. No text. Keep it quiet and natural, without polished e-commerce styling.
```
### Material study
```text
Use muji-style-skill to create a quiet material-study poster about unbleached linen that has been washed many times. Emphasize fibers, folds, and natural light. Add no props.
```
</details>
<details>
<summary><strong>Information & editorial</strong> — exact copy and measured silence</summary>
### Information poster
```text
Use muji-style-skill to design a vertical poster for a community plant exchange. Preserve this exact copy:
Plant Exchange Day
October 18, 10:00–15:00
Qinghe Community Courtyard
Keep the information clear and do not add decorative illustration.
```
### Editorial poster
```text
Use muji-style-skill to create a 3:4 editorial poster for the exact phrase “use slowly, repair carefully.” Keep the subject small and preserve at least 65% empty space.
```

<summary><strong>Everyday scenes</strong> — ordinary life without lifestyle staging</summary>
### Domestic still life
```text
Use muji-style-skill to compose an early-morning kitchen still life with a wooden tray, a white ceramic bowl, and one pear. Make it feel inhabited, but include exactly one concrete sign of use.
```
### Landscape photograph
```text
Use muji-style-skill to create a 16:9 image of white cotton socks drying in natural light. Emphasize the cotton texture and ordinary domestic life. No title and no commercial-advertising finish.
```
</details>
<details>
<summary><strong>Drawing & originality</strong> — useful lines and an unbranded result</summary>
### Line illustration
```text
Use muji-style-skill to draw an informational line illustration of hands repairing an old wooden chair. Show only the details needed to understand the action. No cute characters, stickers, or decorative doodles.
```
### Originality stress test
```text
Create an original, unbranded quiet-living poster for a compact aroma diffuser. Preserve functional clarity and material honesty, but do not reproduce any MUJI logo, red block, product code, price label, packaging, campaign copy, or known advertisement composition.
```
</details>
## Delivery format
| Image | Prompt | Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Generated raster image when available | Exact production-ready generation prompt | One line naming palette, composition, material, and treatment |
If image generation is unavailable, the skill returns the prompt and states that limitation.
