Subject Line Formulas

• Curiosity gap: "The mistake hiding in your [thing]."
• Specificity: "How I [result] with [oddly specific detail]." Concrete > vague.
• Stakes: "Don't [common action] until you read this."
• Pattern break: "Forget [common advice]."
• Question that's 'about me': "Is your [thing] secretly [problem]?"
• Rules:
  • Short — front-load the hook word. Visible length varies by client (~35–45 chars on mobile, ~70 on desktop); make the hook land inside the first ~35 characters and keep the whole line under ~50.
  • Lowercase/personal tone often outperforms shouty caps.
  • One idea; avoid two competing gaps.
  • No false promise — the body must pay it off or trust (and deliverability) erodes.

Generation Workflow

1. Intake. Confirm: the offer/message, exact audience and list warmth, sender voice, goal (clicks / replies / sales), and email type (value newsletter vs launch/promo). Ask if missing when the user can respond; otherwise state assumptions up front — never invent prices, dates, or claims silently.
2. Variants. Write 3–5 subject lines across different formulas, each with its paired preview text. Label the formula. Read patterns.md (same folder) for subject+preview pair structures, opening lines, and CTA lines — adapt, don't copy.
3. Select. Recommend one pair and say why (which gap, who it qualifies, char count).
4. Write the body per Body Flow, sized ~150–300 words for most emails; longer only when the story earns it.
5. Check against the checklist and state the result.

Launch/Promo vs Value Emails

• Value newsletter: the loop resolves into the insight itself; CTA is soft (read more, reply). Tension comes from the story.
• Launch/promo: tension comes from a real decision with real stakes. Urgency and scarcity are allowed only when true (an actual deadline, an actual price change) — fabricated countdowns burn the list. Name the offer plainly; the story earns the pitch, it doesn't hide it.
• A P.S. line is prime real estate in promo emails — restate the CTA or deadline there for skimmers who jump to the end.

Preview Text Pairing

• The preview text is a second line of the hook, shown next to the subject.
• Make it extend the subject's gap, never restate it.
• If left empty, clients pull the first body line — so write it deliberately.
• Clients truncate preview text too (~40–90 chars visible): keep it under ~90 and put the essential idea in the first ~40.

The Opening Line

• Skip greetings and warm-up; open a loop in the first sentence.
• Mirror a feeling the reader already has ("If your inbox stresses you out before 9am…").
• Short first sentence. White space invites the read.

Body Flow

• Three-act: relatable setup → tension/problem → resolution that leads to the CTA.
• One idea per email; ruthless cuts. Skimmable: short paragraphs, line breaks.
• Build toward a single decision — the CTA is the resolution of the body's loop.

The CTA

• One action per email. Competing CTAs split attention and kill clicks. Repeating the same link/action (mid-body, end, P.S.) still counts as one CTA — repetition is fine, competition isn't.
• Make it specific and low-friction ("Reply 'yes'", "Grab your spot", one link).
• Optionally bookend: echo the subject's phrase right before the CTA.

Bad → Good Rewrite

• ❌ Subject: "My new watercolor course is here!" — an announcement about you: no gap, no feeling, reads as promo in the half-second scan.
• ✅ Subject: "you don't need talent to paint this" — emotional mirror (the "I'm not artistic" fear) + curiosity gap (paint what?) + lowercase personal tone; 34 chars, hook fully visible on mobile.

• Exactly one clear, low-friction CTA?
• Does the email deliver on the subject's promise?
• Low opens → fix the subject/preview. Low clicks → fix the body/CTA.
