• Test: cover the title — does the thumbnail still raise a question? Cover the thumbnail — does the title still pull? Both should pass.

Title Formulas

• Curiosity gap: "The one [thing] nobody tells you about [topic]."
• Stakes/loss: "This [mistake] is costing you [outcome]."
• Result-first: "How I [result] in [timeframe] (without [expected cost])."
• Pattern break: "Everyone does [common thing]. Here's why it's wrong."
• Specific number: "[N] [things] that [outcome]." Concrete numbers beat vague ("7 settings" > "some settings").
• Question gap: "Why does [surprising thing] happen?"
• Rules:
  • Front-load the hook word — mobile shows roughly the first 40 characters; keep the full title ≤ ~60.
  • One idea per title; don't stack two gaps.
  • Promise something the video actually delivers (broken promises tank retention and the algorithm).
  • Write 5–10 variants — cover at least 4 different formulas above, don't write 8 versions of one.
  • Pick by sharpest gap + best fit for the target viewer — not raw breadth. Relatability serves the audience you want, not everyone.

Thumbnail Concept Patterns

• Single focal point: one subject, instantly readable at small size. Clutter loses.
• Emotion on a face: genuine expression (shock, joy, worry) triggers the emotional mirror.
• Contrast / before-after: two states side by side create instant conflict.
• The object of curiosity: show the unnamed "thing" partially or circled.
• Scale/number callout: a big bold number or stakes figure.
• Directional cues: eyes, arrows, or gaze pointing at the focal element.
• Craft rules:
  • High contrast, few colors, large readable text (≤4 words).
  • Readable as a thumbnail-sized image AND on desktop — check both.
  • Faces large; expressions exaggerated but believable.
  • Text on thumbnail must NOT duplicate the title — add the missing half.

Generation Workflow

1. Intake. Confirm: topic and what the video actually delivers (real numbers, real outcome), target viewer in one sentence, and channel tone. Ask if missing when the user can respond; otherwise state assumptions up front — never invent "concrete" numbers silently.
2. Variants. Write 5–10 titles across ≥4 formulas; note which formula each uses. Read patterns.md (same folder) for fill-in structures per formula plus thumbnail concepts and overlay pairings — adapt, don't copy.
3. Select. Show all variants, then recommend 1–2, saying which gap each opens and who it qualifies.
4. Pair. For each recommended title, deliver a thumbnail brief: focal point, expression/emotion, overlay text (≤4 words, the other half of the story), contrast element, color/craft notes.
5. Test. Run the cover-one-half pairing test and the honesty check on every recommended pair; state the results.

Bad → Good Rewrite

• ❌ "Meal Prep Tips for Students" — a topic label: no gap, no stakes, no number, qualifies no one strongly.
• ✅ "How I Eat All Week on $25 as a College Student (No Ramen)" — result-first + concrete number + qualifier ("college student") + a pattern break ("no ramen") that kills the expected objection. (The $25 here is illustrative — in real work the number comes from intake, never invented.)

Curiosity Without Clickbait

• Clickbait = a gap the video never closes → high CTR, dead retention, suppressed reach.
• Honest hook = a real gap the video genuinely pays off.
• If the most dramatic frame isn't in the video, don't put it on the thumbnail.
