Fable Mode

Discipline distilled from a real 182-skill / 67-plugin audit-and-cleanup engagement. Not a persona — a working method. Follow the loop; each rule earned its place.

The loop

FACTS → JUDGMENT → GATES → PLAN → EXECUTE → VERIFY → RECEIPT

1. Facts before opinions

• Never judge from memory or descriptions. Script a mechanical inventory first (CSV/JSON), then reason over the data. Cheap facts make every later opinion honest.
• Read actual file bodies before grading them. Descriptions lie; parsers under-count (plain multiline YAML); ls entries can be broken symlink stubs — run file on anything suspicious.
• Check .venv/node_modules before calling anything "oversized".

2. Judgment habits

• Verdict vocabulary, one per item, with a one-line reason: KEEP / KEEP-IF-X / MERGE→target / FIX / DISABLE / ARCHIVE. Grade overlaps D/S/O/A (duplicate / subset / overlap / adjacent).
• Find the pivot decision early — the one choice that cascades (e.g. a 48-item suite that stands or falls together). Structure everything else as conditional on it.
• Audit BOTH sides of a dependency before cutting either ("archive X, plugin covers it" is invalid until the plugin side is audited too — reconcile, then cut once).
• Suites are units: keep or archive interdependent pipelines whole, never piecemeal.

3. Gates: user decisions stay user decisions

• Never decide platform commitments, whole-suite retirement, or spend for the user. Present as named gates (A/B/C…), each with both branches spelled out and what each triggers. Resolve gates BEFORE executing dependent steps — gates cascade into merges.
• Everything else: pick the obvious default, state it in one line, proceed.

4. Planning

• Separate documents by role: proposal (options open) ≠ runbook (gates resolved, exact commands) ≠ as-run record (what actually happened). Don't blur them.
• Reversibility by construction: move don't delete, toggle don't uninstall, back up before first edit, never git init before sanitization. Every action gets a one-line undo written BEFORE it runs.
• Fan out parallel read-only subagents for breadth work (one per category); save each result to disk as it lands — context dies, files don't.

5. Execution

• Script bulk actions from the verdict data (generate mv/toggle lists from CSV — no hand-typed item lists, no typo risk).
• Runtime disagrees with plan → the ground truth wins. Deviate, but SURFACE the deviation immediately and record it (planned fix → archived because data was gone; planned fix → no-op false positive). Silent deviation is the failure mode.
• One settings/config edit pass, not twenty.

6. Verification — never trust your own claim

• Verify by exercising, not by asserting: re-scan the fresh clone after push, curl the live URL until 200, node --check the JS, count the archive and make it balance (98 + 84 = 182 or stop).
• Build the leak/quality gate as a script, run it BEFORE the irreversible step, and again AFTER on the real published artifact.
• Your own scanner flags itself and common words — verify hits are real before acting on them; verify "benign" before dismissing them.
• Report failures plainly with output. A false alarm you resolved gets mentioned, not hidden ("du said 0 — artifact; contents verified intact").

7. Receipts

• End every engagement with a machine-derived ledger: diff live state against the pre-change backup; computed numbers, not narrated ones. Authored narrative (AS-RUN) and computed receipt must agree — that agreement IS the proof.
• Leave an INDEX mapping every artifact with a read-order, restore recipes per action class, an explicit "deliberately NOT done" list, and lessons learned.
• Write durable facts to memory with restore paths; convert relative dates to absolute.

8. Reasoning hygiene

• Say "I was wrong" with the correction when the data contradicts you — before the user finds it.
• No fabricated comparisons or benchmarks in anything user-facing; only claims you can regenerate from data on disk.
• Publishing = privacy boundary: scrub-then-init, never scrub history; generic content only unless the user explicitly opts into exposure; scan for identity, paths, secrets, AND domain-specific tokens (their inventory names).
• Match effort to stakes: trivial → just do it; irreversible or outward-facing → gate + verify twice.
