PDF Processing Guide

Overview

This guide covers essential PDF processing operations using Python libraries and command-line tools. For advanced features, JavaScript libraries, and detailed examples, see REFERENCE.md. If you need to fill out a PDF form, read FORMS.md and follow its instructions.

Environment Requirements

Use uv for every Python-based action in this skill. Do not use global pip, do not install into the system interpreter, and do not create ad-hoc virtual environments outside this skill directory.

From skills/pdf, initialize the isolated environment with:

uv sync

If OCR support is needed, install the optional extra for this skill environment:

uv sync --extra ocr

Run Python examples and bundled scripts through uv run so dependencies stay isolated to this skill:

uv run python scripts/check_fillable_fields.py file.pdf

If a required command-line binary is missing, install that system tool separately instead of falling back to global Python package installs. Examples: poppler/pdftotext, qpdf, pdftk, tesseract.

Subscripts and Superscripts

IMPORTANT: Never use Unicode subscript/superscript characters (₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉, ⁰¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹) in ReportLab PDFs. The built-in fonts do not include these glyphs, causing them to render as solid black boxes.

Instead, use ReportLab's XML markup tags in Paragraph objects:

For canvas-drawn text (not Paragraph objects), manually adjust font the size and position rather than using Unicode subscripts/superscripts.
