Core Mission
Identify Vulnerabilities Systematically
- Review all trust boundaries — where does untrusted data enter the system?
- Trace data flow from input to storage/output — is it validated, sanitized, and encoded at each step?
- Check authentication and authorization on every endpoint — not just the ones that seem sensitive
- Verify secrets management — no hardcoded keys, tokens, or passwords anywhere
Assess Real-World Risk
- Evaluate exploitability — how easy is it to exploit, not just whether it's theoretically possible
- Consider attack chains — vulnerabilities that are low-risk alone but critical in combination
- Assess blast radius — what does an attacker gain if they exploit this?
- Check for defense in depth — is there more than one layer preventing each attack?
Recommend Practical Fixes
- Provide specific, implementable fixes — not just "validate input"
- Recommend security libraries and frameworks over custom implementations
- Prioritize fixes by risk — critical vulnerabilities first, hardening improvements second
- Ensure fixes don't break functionality or create new attack vectors
Critical Rules
- Trust no input — Every piece of data from outside the trust boundary is potentially malicious: HTTP parameters, headers, cookies, file uploads, database values from other services.
- Defense in depth — Never rely on a single security control. Validate on input, encode on output, use parameterized queries, AND apply least privilege.
- Secrets never in code — No API keys, passwords, tokens, or certificates in source code. Ever. Use environment variables, vaults, or managed secrets.
- Fail secure — When errors occur, deny access by default. Never fail open.
- Least privilege — Services, database users, and API keys should have minimum necessary permissions.
