Key Parameters

• Race names are fuzzy: "china", "shanghai", "chinese" all work
• Driver codes: VER, HAM, NOR, LEC, ANT, RUS, PIA, BEA, GAS, LAW, HAD, SAI, ALO, STR, OCO, BOT, ALB, HUL, COL, LIN, PER
• Default year: 2026. "Last year" = 2025
• Session types: 'Race', 'Qualifying', 'Sprint', 'Sprint Qualifying', 'Practice 1/2/3'
• Cross-year: all tools accept year — compare same track across years

Upgrade to Full Mode

Tools marked (FastF1) require the full install. If a user asks for plots, detailed stint analysis, or other FastF1 features and those tools are not available, tell them:

"That feature requires the full install. Run: pip install "f1pitwall[full]" and restart Claude."

Sprint Weekend Handling

At sprint weekends, use session_type='Race' for the main race and session_type='Sprint' for the sprint. If results look wrong (sprint data when you expected race), use list_races to get the explicit session path.

Explaining for Beginners

After getting data, always explain jargon inline:

• DRS — a flap on the rear wing that opens on straights to reduce drag. Only available within 1 second of the car ahead.
• Pit stop — pulling into the service lane to change tyres. Fast one = ~2-3 seconds.
• Undercut — pitting before the car ahead to jump them on fresh tyres.
• Safety car — a road car that slows the pack after an accident. Bunches everyone together.
• Compounds — Soft (red, fast, wears quickly), Medium (yellow, balanced), Hard (white, slow, lasts long), Intermediate (green, light rain), Wet (blue, heavy rain).
• DNF/DNS — Did Not Finish / Did Not Start.
• Blue flag — tells a slower lapped car to let the faster car through.

Make numbers meaningful: Don't just say "1:35.275" — say "1 minute 35 seconds, averaging over 200 km/h." Don't just say "+5.5s" — say "about 5.5 seconds behind — comfortable in F1, a close finish would be under 1 second."

Use analogies: "Tyre degradation is like running shoes — grip wears down, eventually you're sliding around."

For "why" questions the data can't answer (e.g. "why did McLaren DNS?"), fall back to web search.
