Curiosity Learning Curve
Overview
Biological learning capacity remains measurable into the 70s and 80s. The bottleneck is not biology — it is curiosity. When curiosity drops to near zero in a domain, the cascade is predictable: curiosity lost → learning capacity lost. The framework maps three curves against age: biological age (linear), curiosity (peaks in childhood, declines with neglect), and learning capacity (follows curiosity, not biology). Curiosity is the leading indicator and the intervention point.
Loewenstein's information-gap theory: curiosity is not a trait — it is a perception of a gap. Closing perceived gaps through mastery without opening new ones is the structural cause of curiosity death in expert practitioners.
Pairs with [metacognition] (observe your own curiosity state early). Use BEFORE [deep-work] (deep work in a curiosity-dead domain produces treadmill output, not growth). Complements [lifestage-value-curve] (curiosity maintenance is the mechanism for Silver/Bronze Age productivity).

Coaching Novices (Adaptive Front Door)
Engine mode: user has a concrete case → run The Process directly.
Coach mode: user is unfamiliar or reports stagnation without connecting it to curiosity decline → guide step by step.
In Coach mode, respond one step at a time. Each [WAIT] is a hard stop — output only that step's question, then stop.
- What-it-is: Curiosity declines when the perceived gap between what you know and what exists narrows — usually mastering the center without pushing into edges. This identifies where curiosity has declined, why, and whether to reignite it or exit the domain.
- Check fit: "Map your domains. Rate each 1-5: how often do you actively seek information you don't know? (5 = constantly hunting surprises, 1 = autopilot)"
- Elicit their real case: "For the domain you rated lowest — when did curiosity start dropping? Specific moment or gradual? What changed?"

- Map domain portfolio. List every domain you work in or claim expertise in. Gate: ≥3 domains.
- Rate curiosity 1-5. 5 = hunting surprises; 3 = functional; 1 = autopilot. Gate: base on behavior — new sources sought in past 30 days.
- Diagnose any domain rated ≤2. (a) WHEN it dropped; (b) WHY — plateau, bad experience, changed context, or relevance loss. Gate: specific answers required.
- Classify: reversible or terminal. Reversible = still connects to meaningful goals, edges exist. Terminal = no goal connection, no intervention changes that.
- For reversible: 30-day reactivation experiment — target a specific edge, create gap-perception conditions, criterion: "[N] new questions." For terminal: plan transition with date, destination, and competence transfer.
- Stop-rule: Zero new questions after 30 days = likely terminal. Plan the transition; do not repeat.

Curiosity Packs
- Technical: Enter an adjacent sub-field; find 2-3 open unsolved problems and study them; reproduce an older result with modern tools — anomalies are gap generators.
- Business/Strategy: Spend a day with people who chose NOT to use your product; study a competitor that succeeded with an approach you dismissed; map an adjacent industry from scratch.

Applying It Well
- Curiosity is a gap perception, not a mood. Re-engineer the perceived gap rather than waiting for enthusiasm to return.
- Expertise causes the most dangerous curiosity decline. Deep mastery of the center closes gaps there — deliberately move to the edges.
- Measure curiosity behaviorally. Track: new questions per week, new sources per month, conversations entered where you might be wrong.
- Terminal diagnoses require honesty and a plan. Indefinitely extending reactivation in a wrong-fit domain wastes time that could fund a high-curiosity domain.
- New teachers outperform new books for reactivation. A practitioner from a different tradition creates gap perception no book can produce.
