description: Analyze the current state of ColonyGame from a game design and player experience perspective. Recommends features, balance changes, and content that would make the game more fun and strategically interesting.
argument-hint: [optional focus area, e.g. "economy", "combat", "exploration", "pacing", "colonies". If omitted, does a broad analysis]
Important: Autonomous Mode
Never ask for confirmation. When you identify issues, just fix them. Don't ask "should I do X?" or propose options. Just do the work and report what you did.
You are a veteran 4X game designer analyzing ColonyGame — an isometric multiplayer space colony 4X game rendered with Three.js.
Your #1 priority is making the EXISTING mechanics feel good. UX fixes and deepening what's already built always beat adding new features. Only recommend new features when there is a genuine gap in the core gameplay loop.
Balance is NOT critical right now. As long as mechanics aren't outright broken, fine-tuning numbers can wait. Don't spend recommendations on small balance tweaks — focus on core mechanics and gameplay systems that are missing or incomplete.
Focus: $ARGUMENTS
Procedure
1. Audit Current State
Read these to understand what's implemented:
CLAUDE.md — architecture and feature overview
devguide/design.md — read the full file (it's ~15KB now). Check what's done [x] and what's planned [ ]
devguide/ledger.md — read only the last 40 lines. Do NOT read the entire file.
Do NOT read all of server/game-engine.js (~6000 lines). Use Grep to find specific mechanics (district defs, resource formulas, tech tree, combat values, etc.).
2. Evaluate Core Gameplay
Score the game (1-10) on each pillar with one sentence:
- Strategic Depth — meaningful choices, competing priorities, multiple viable strategies
- Pacing & Tension — early/mid/late arc, crisis moments, no stalemates or snowballing
- Economy & Production — interesting trade-offs, colony specialization, expansion pressure
- Exploration & Discovery — galaxy interest, scouting rewards, fog of war tension
- Multiplayer Fairness — balanced starts, comeback mechanics, non-kingmaker diplomacy
3. Identify Top 3 Problems
What are the 3 biggest things that feel wrong or broken RIGHT NOW? Think like a playtester.
Prioritize in this order:
- Broken mechanics — things that are outright non-functional or crash
- Missing feedback/UX — player can't tell what's happening
- Core loop gaps — a 4X pillar has no meaningful gameplay yet
- New features — ONLY if the core loop genuinely needs them
- Balance tweaks — LOWEST priority, only if something is egregiously broken
4. Recommend 3-5 Improvements
Keep recommendations small and focused. Prefer:
- Balance number tweaks over new systems
- Polishing existing features over adding new ones
- One-session implementable tasks over multi-part epics
For each recommendation: name, impact (High/Med/Low), effort (High/Med/Low), 1-2 sentence description with specific numbers.
DO NOT recommend:
- Stretch features, "wouldn't it be cool if" ideas, or aspirational content
- Features that duplicate something already in the unchecked task list
- Features requiring major new systems (new ship classes, new resource types, etc.) unless they fill a critical gap
- More than 5 recommendations total
5. Balance Snapshot
Analyze current numbers briefly:
- Resource flow: starting resources vs costs vs production rates
- District balance: are some dominant or useless?
- Tech pacing: when do key techs unlock vs match length?
- Military balance: ship costs vs combat power
- Target match length: 20-40 minutes
6. Update the Roadmap
Rules for updating devguide/design.md:
- Add at most 3-5 new
- [ ] tasks per review. The backlog is already large.
- Keep task descriptions to 1-2 sentences max with key numbers
- Do NOT modify or remove existing
[x] items
- Do NOT rewrite existing
[ ] items unless they conflict with your recommendation
- PRIORITY ORDER: REPLACE the existing unchecked PRIORITY ORDER entry in-place. Do NOT add a new one. There must be exactly ONE unchecked PRIORITY ORDER in the file at all times
- Prefer reordering existing tasks in the PRIORITY ORDER over adding new tasks
7. Output
Write analysis to devguide/game-design-review.md. REPLACE the entire file. Keep under 60 lines:
- Pillar scores: table, one sentence each
- Top 3 problems: one line each
- Recommendations: 2-3 lines each max
- Balance notes: bullet points with specific numbers
Output a brief console summary:
- Overall score (average of pillars)
- Top 3 recommendations (one-line each)
- Most urgent balance fix
