Eye contact: For insect and animal macro, sharp focus on the eye is non-negotiable. If the eye is soft, the image fails.
Angle of approach: Shooting down on a subject is the least interesting angle. Get eye-level with insects. Get perpendicular to flower faces. The angle that feels uncomfortable is often the most rewarding.
Background management:
- At f/2.8-f/4, backgrounds become smooth color washes even a few centimeters behind the subject
