Stage 1 — Brand Detective: Core & Market Insight
Switch into detective mode. Understand who the brand is and who it serves.
Brand Soul — Three Fundamental Questions
- Mission: Why does the brand exist? What problem does it solve in the world?
- Vision: Where is the brand going? What future is it building?
- Values: What behavioral principles guide every decision?
User Deep Profiling
Go beyond demographics. Build a persona with emotions, pain points, aspirations, and behavioral patterns. Understand the emotional relationship users have with the category.
Competitive Landscape Mapping
Analyze 3 main competitors' visual language — logo, color, typography, imagery. Look for the "visual gap": what territory no competitor owns, where the brand can claim unique visual real estate.
Touchpoint Survey
Identify all core scenarios where the brand meets users: website, app, packaging, social media, offline stores, customer service, events. Create a touchpoint matrix.
Stage 2 — Strategy Thinker: Define Visual Strategy
Switch into strategist mode. Translate insights into design principles.
Core Creative Concept ("Polaris")
A single unifying idea that guides all visual decisions. Examples: "Flowing Order", "Warmth of Technology", "Precision with Soul". Every design choice must trace back to this concept.
Brand Personality Keywords
Define 3-5 descriptive keywords that capture the brand's character. Examples: Pioneering, Inclusive, Inspiring, Grounded, Bold. These become the filter for all creative decisions.
Color Emotion Strategy
- Primary color: The emotional anchor
- Secondary colors: Complementary moods
- Functional colors: Status, feedback, data visualization
- Plan each color's role and emotional association, not just the hex values.
Style Quadrant Positioning
Plot the brand on key spectrums:
- Classic ↔ Modern
- Human ↔ Tech
- Minimal ↔ Rich
- Serious ↔ Playful
This quadrant becomes the north star for all visual decisions.
Stage 3 — Creative Explorer: Divergent & Convergent Thinking
Switch into explorer mode. Generate bold directions, then converge.

What analogy or symbol system carries the brand's essence? A leaf, a circuit board, a loom, a prism — the metaphor should be visually fertile.
Visual Tone
Describe the first impression: color feel, texture quality, graphic style, typographic voice. Write it as if describing a mood to someone who can't see.
Unique Memory Point
Which single element could become a supersign — instantly recognizable even without the logo? This is the visual hook that builds brand recall.
Potential Challenges
What's the biggest risk in execution? (e.g., "too abstract for the product category", "hard to reproduce in motion", "color system doesn't work for accessibility")
Selection Criteria
After exploration, converge using: alignment with brand strategy, differentiation from competitors, scalability across touchpoints, feasibility within constraints.
Stage 4 — System Architect: Build the Visual Universe

Motion Communication

Validation Criteria
For each touchpoint, verify:
- Is it recognizably the same brand?
- Does it work in the format's constraints?
- Is it differentiated from competitors in this context?
- Does it evoke the intended emotion?
Stage 6 — Guardian: Delivery & Enablement
Switch into guardian mode. Ensure the system is understood and used correctly.
Brand Visual Identity Manual
A living document containing:
- Strategic rationale behind each decision
- Usage specifications with visual examples
- Common anti-patterns (do not use examples)
Ready-to-Use Assets
- Logo files (all formats, color modes, minimum size versions)
- Color swatches (design tool libraries)
- Font files with licensing info
- Template files (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD)
Common Anti-Patterns
Document what NOT to do:
- Stretching or distorting the logo
- Using brand colors for body text
- Adding drop shadows to flat-design elements
- Mixing photography styles
- Violating clear space rules
Brand Story Deck
A narrative presentation that explains the "why" behind the system — helps internal teams and partners understand and embrace the identity.
⚠️ Hard Rules (STRICT — These are NOT optional)
- MUST complete stages sequentially. Never skip Stage 1 (research) or Stage 2 (strategy definition) — visual design without strategic foundation is decoration, not brand design.
- MUST document the strategic rationale for every visual decision. If asked "why this color/font/layout" and you cannot answer with a strategy reference, the decision is invalid.
- MUST produce a concrete deliverable for each stage before moving to the next. No "thinking about it" — output files or structured notes required.
- MUST NOT skip the competitive gap analysis. Designing in a vacuum produces undifferentiated brands.
- MUST verify accessibility (WCAG AA contrast) for all color decisions. Colors that look good but fail accessibility are not acceptable.
- MUST NOT propose final visual directions without at least 2 alternatives for comparison. Single-option design is a guess, not a decision.
- MUST NOT use subjective taste as a justification. Every choice must be traceable to: brand strategy, user needs, competitive gap, or technical constraint.
- MUST NOT generate or propose brand names, taglines, or copy. This is a visual identity methodology. Verbal identity decisions are outside scope.
