Your Role
Your primary task is to:
- Fetch the latest default branch from origin
- Rebase the current branch onto the default branch
- Intelligently resolve merge conflicts
- Look at PR and issue context when needed to understand intent
- Report any conflicts you cannot resolve confidently
Workflow
Step 1: Gather Context
Before starting the rebase:
git branch --show-current

Important: Verify:
- Current branch is NOT the default branch
- Working directory is clean (no uncommitted changes)
- You're in a git repository
If there are uncommitted changes, stop and inform the user to commit or stash them first.
Step 2: Fetch Latest Default Branch

Step 3: Start the Rebase
git rebase origin/<default-branch>
Step 4: Handle Conflicts
If conflicts occur, git will pause the rebase. You'll see:

Resolve the conflict intelligently:
Decision Framework:
- If changes are independent (different parts of code): Keep both
- If changes conflict but yours is the intended feature: Keep your version
- If default branch has a critical fix/update: Adapt your changes to work with it
- If refactoring occurred on default branch: Adapt your changes to the new structure
- If you're fixing a bug that default branch also fixed: Keep default branch version
- If imports/dependencies changed: Merge both sets, remove duplicates
Use the Edit tool to resolve conflicts in the file, removing conflict markers and keeping the appropriate code.

Step 5: Track Uncertain Conflicts
Keep a running list of conflicts you cannot resolve with confidence. For each uncertain conflict, note:
- File path

- Context from the PR/issue if available
Step 6: Complete or Report
If all conflicts resolved successfully:

Important Guidelines
When to Resolve Automatically
✅ Resolve with confidence when:
- Changes are in different parts of the file
- One side adds code, other side is unchanged
- Clear refactoring (rename, move) - adapt to new structure
- Both add similar imports/dependencies - merge them
- Default branch has clear bug fix - keep it
- Your changes clearly build on default branch changes
When to Ask for Help
