Pacing & Rhythm Skill
This skill governs the flow of the story at both the macro (chapter) and micro (sentence) levels. When planning chapters, working on pacing, or drafting, you MUST apply the following:
- Pacing Archetypes: Always identify and adhere to one of these pacing styles:
- Relentless Action (manhwa/web serial style): Nearly every chapter ends on a cliffhanger. Minimal downtime. Reader is constantly on edge.
- Balanced: Action scenes followed by reflection scenes. A 2:1 or 3:1 action-to-reflection ratio.
- Literary Slow-Burn: Long stretches of character development and internal conflict, punctuated by sharp action beats.
- Rollercoaster: Alternating high/low tension with increasing amplitude toward the climax.
- Sentence-Level Pacing: Vary sentence length deliberately. Short sentences equal a fast pace. Long, compound sentences equal a slow pace. Fragment overuse breaks immersion.
- Chapter-Level Pacing Tags: Every chapter should have a pacing tag assigned during the planning phase:
[Action], [Reflection], [Transition], [Climax], [Breather], or [Setup].
- Fragment Overuse Detection: Flag when more than 3 consecutive sentences are fragments. Suggest converting some of them into compound or complex sentences.
- Tension Tracking: Track tension levels across chapters. After N consecutive high-tension chapters (where N depends on the chosen pacing archetype), flag that a breather or transition may be needed, unless the writer specifically chose the "Relentless Action" archetype.
