The Ten Brand Ideals
Overview
Functional criteria (bold, recognizable, protectable, consistent, timeless) do not get to the heart of brand identity. The ten ideals are the deeper evaluation criteria that separate the most sustainable, effective identities from the merely competent. They are not about a particular aesthetic — design excellence is a given. They hold true for any effort: launching a venture, creating a product or service, repositioning an existing brand, working on a merger, or creating a retail presence.
When to use
- Judging or critiquing an identity system beyond "does it look good."
- Setting acceptance criteria or a scorecard for an identity project before work starts.
- Defending why one solution is stronger than another to decision-makers.
- Auditing an existing brand for weaknesses (e.g. incoherence, no differentiation, drifting meaning).
- Not for: mechanics of making the marks (naming, brandmark type, the design process) — hand off to the sibling process/brandmark skills. These ideals judge the result, not the workflow.

| Commitment | Organizations must actively manage their assets — brand name, trademarks, integrated sales/marketing systems, and standards. |

Note: the slice presents ten ideals but enumerates the nine above by name in the overview panel. Treat this as the working rubric; the tenth is implied by the surrounding functional criteria (design excellence / craft as a given). Do not invent a named tenth ideal the book does not state.
What each ideal demands in practice
- Vision — Requires courage: imagine what others cannot see and have the tenacity to deliver it. Look for passionate leaders who inspire a new view of the future.
- Meaning — Symbols are vessels for meaning; it grows with frequent use and understanding, and evolves over time. Meaning drives creativity, builds consensus (a "campfire" agreed before any visual/naming presentation), and evolves as the company changes.
- Authenticity — Rooted in self-knowledge; organizations that know who they are start from strength and build genuine, sustainable brands. (In JUST Creative's State of Brand 2023, authenticity was the top future concern at 74.5%.)
- Coherence — Achieved via a unified voice / dynamic central idea, one company strategy, every touchpoint as a brand experience, cohesive look and feel, uniform quality, and clarity and simplicity of language.
- Flexibility — Requires marketing flexibility (a workhorse across touchpoints), a durable brand architecture anticipating the future, and a control-vs-creativity balance that stays fresh, relevant, and recognizable.
- Differentiation — It is not enough to be good; brands must be distinctive, pique interest, and be easy to remember. "When everybody zigs, zag."
- Value — Identity is an intangible strategic asset expressing competitive difference; value is also preserved through legal protection (trademarks/trade dress across served markets, plus compliance education).
- Commitment — Protect, preserve, and nurture the asset with a top-down mandate and bottom-up understanding, disciplined about integrity and relevance.
- Longevity — Durability comes from commitment to the equity of a central idea over time and the capacity to transcend change (marks stay recognizable while evolving in small, subtle ways).
Quick reference
Score any identity against these prompts:
- Vision — Is there a clear, leader-driven point of view?
- Meaning — Does it stand for a defined idea/values, explained and agreed?
- Authenticity — Is expression congruent with who the organization actually is?
- Coherence — Does every touchpoint feel like one company?
- Flexibility — Can it stretch to future products and channels without breaking?
- Differentiation — Is it distinctive and memorable versus the category?
- Value — Does it build measurable equity and is it legally protectable?
- Commitment — Is there an active mandate to manage and enforce it?
- Longevity — Will a central idea endure through constant flux?
Common mistakes
- Judging only functional criteria. Recognizable/protectable/consistent are table stakes; they "do not get to the heart" of identity.
- Mistaking the ideals for an aesthetic. They are not a style; design excellence is assumed, not scored.
- Presenting visuals before meaning is agreed. Consensus on brand essence and attributes must precede any logo, naming, or messaging.
- Confusing coherence with rigidity. Consistency is a trust-building baseline, not a straitjacket.
- Treating identity as a one-off deliverable. Without commitment (active, mandated management) value and coherence decay.
- Optimizing longevity by never changing — durability is equity in a central idea that evolves subtly, not a frozen mark.
