Chaining Transitions
Overview
The end of each sentence hands the baton to the start of the next. A sentence that introduces idea A→B is followed by a sentence that opens on B and pushes to C; the next opens on C and pushes to D. Paragraphs chain the same way: the first sentence of a paragraph picks up the idea the previous paragraph closed on. The reader is never asked to jump — every new idea is introduced after the ground it stands on has been laid.
This is the known-new contract (a.k.a. given-new): begin each sentence with information already established (the known), and place the genuinely new information at the end, in the stress position. The next sentence then opens on that new information, which is now known. Repeating or echoing the tail concept at the head is anadiplosis.
Credit: This technique is distilled from Kangning Huang's 2017 NASA NESSF proposal, "Modeling the water requirement for urban heat island mitigation." The annotated examples below are from that document.
The single most important rule
Transitions are NOT conjunctions. Do not "improve flow" by sprinkling however / furthermore / as a result between sentences, and do not merge choppy sentences into one. Those hide the seams; they do not chain the ideas. Real chaining changes what word each sentence starts and ends with so the tail of one becomes the head of the next. Connectives (Nevertheless, Consequently, Moreover) are allowed — but only riding on top of a real known→new hand-off, never as a substitute for it.
(This is the exact failure mode to avoid: a generic "make it flow" pass reaches for conjunctions and sentence-merging, collapsing the A→B→C→D ladder instead of building it.)
The mechanic

- Head = known. Open on a noun/idea the reader already holds.
- Tail = new, stressed. End on the one new idea you want to carry forward.
- Baton. Sentence N+1 opens by naming (or echoing) sentence N's tail.
Annotated examples (from the proposal)
1. Sentence-to-sentence chain — Introduction ¶1. Follow the bolded baton hand-offs:
"The urban heat island (UHI) effect ... can significantly increase health risks and energy consumption. The most severe impact on human health stems from heat waves intensified by UHI. For example, during the 2003 European heat wave that killed more than 22,000 people, almost all of France's 14,800 deaths occurred in the Paris metropolitan area, where temperature was up to 4°C higher than that of rural areas."
Chain: health risks → human health → heat waves → heat wave → deaths → temperature. Each sentence opens on the prior sentence's tail.
2. The masterclass chain — Introduction ¶3. A long ladder where every link is the previous tail:
"...requiring stronger ET for mitigation. Consequently, stronger UHI effects and less soil water require additional water supply, i.e. irrigation ... As urban green spaces expanded rapidly, irrigation water usage has increased, becoming a major fraction of urban water usage, and amounting to more than 50% in arid/semi-arid climates. Vegetation irrigation, albeit a potential means to mitigate UHI, may not be a reasonable use of water in cities under water stress ... Today, about half of the large cities under water stress are located in arid/semi-arid climates."
Chain: ET → soil water → water supply/irrigation → irrigation water usage → urban water usage → vegetation irrigation → water stress → arid/semi-arid climates. Note the connectives ("Consequently," "albeit") ride on top of the hand-off; they never replace it.
3. Paragraph hinge — ¶2 → ¶3. The new paragraph's first sentence reaches back to the prior paragraph's last idea:
¶2 ends: "...one of the most widely recognized and used approaches to enhance ET and mitigate UHI, having achieved temperature reductions of 1.3˚~1.6˚C..."
¶3 opens: "Nevertheless, UHI mitigation by enhancing ET costs cities an important resource—water."
The hinge restates "enhance ET / mitigate UHI" (known) and pushes to "water" (new) — which then becomes the topic that drives all of ¶3.
Procedure (drafting or revising)
- List the idea sequence you need the reader to travel: A → B → C → D → ... Each arrow is one hand-off.
- For each step, write a sentence whose subject/opening is the prior idea and whose final words are the next idea. End-load the new term.
- Open the next sentence by naming that final term — repeat the word or a tight synonym (anadiplosis). Do not introduce a noun at a sentence head that did not appear in the previous sentence.
- At each paragraph break, make the first sentence's opener restate the previous paragraph's closing idea before advancing.
- Add a connective only after the hand-off is structurally in place, to mark the logical relation of the turn:
- turn/tension → Nevertheless, However, albeit, while, may not be, Despite
- consequence → Consequently, Therefore, As a result, thus
- addition → Moreover, In addition
- Keep the steps as separate sentences. Resist merging — merging buries links the reader needs to see one at a time.
Diagnosing a broken chain
Read the first few words of each sentence. If a sentence opens with a noun/idea that did not appear (as a word or close synonym) in the immediately preceding sentence, the baton was dropped — the reader has to jump. Fix by either (a) re-ending the previous sentence on that idea, or (b) re-opening the current sentence on the previous sentence's tail.

Common mistakes
- Treating "transitions" as conjunctions. Adding furthermore/however/as a result without changing sentence heads and tails. This is the #1 failure — it smooths the surface while the ideas still jump.
- Merging sentences to "tighten." Collapsing A→B→C into one sentence hides the ladder. Chaining wants more visible hand-offs, not fewer sentences.
- Front-loading the new idea. Putting the new term as the grammatical subject wastes the stress position; the reader has nothing to grab the next sentence onto.
- Synonym drift. Echoing the tail with a distant paraphrase the reader won't recognize as the same thing. Repeat the word, or use a tight, obvious synonym.
- Chaining trivia instead of the argument. The baton should carry the load-bearing idea, not an incidental noun. Each hand-off should advance the proposal's logic (problem → cause → cost → tension → question).
When NOT to use
- Bulleted lists, tables, methods step-lists, equations — chaining is for argumentative prose.
- When a hard topic break is intended (new section). Use a section heading, not a forced baton.
- Don't over-chain to the point of monotony; vary sentence length and let occasional sentences breathe, as long as the head still anchors on known ground.
