Competing Offer Negotiation
Use your options to get the best outcome. It's information, not betrayal.
When to Use
- You have multiple job offers
- You have an offer but prefer another company still in process
- Current employer counters after your resignation
- You want to accelerate a slow hiring process
The Mindset
Having competing offers isn't disloyal—it's normal. Companies expect it. The key is how you communicate:
Goal: "Help me choose you" not "Give me more or I leave"
You're providing information that helps both sides make good decisions. That's professionalism, not manipulation.
The Framework
CHOOSE Method
| Step | Action | Purpose |
|---|
| C | Confirm interest | Reaffirm you WANT this role |
| H | Honest situation | State the competing offer factually |
| O | Outline specifics | Be clear about what would make you choose them |
| O | Opportunity to match | Ask directly if they can improve |
| S | Set timeline | Give clear decision deadline |
| E | Express preference | Make it clear this isn't just about money |

Informing Company A About Offer from Company B
Subject: Update on my timeline - [Role]
Hi [Name],
I want to be transparent with you: I've received another offer with a deadline of [date].
[Company A] remains my strong preference because [genuine, specific reason—not just flattery].
However, the competing offer is at [$X / has Y benefit], which creates a gap I need to consider.
Is there flexibility in [comp / timeline / specific term] that would help me choose [Company A]? Specifically:
- [Concrete ask 1]
- [Concrete ask 2, if applicable]
I'd like to make a decision by [date]. Can we talk before then?
Thank you,

Accelerating a Slow Process
Subject: Timeline update - [Role]
Hi [Name],
I wanted to share an update: I've received an offer from another company with a decision deadline of [date].
I'm very interested in the [Role] opportunity at [Company] and would prefer to have full information before deciding.
Is it possible to accelerate the remaining steps? I'm flexible on timing and happy to accommodate whatever works on your end.
Please let me know what's realistic.
Thanks,

Responding to a Counter from Current Employer
Hi [Name],
Thank you for the counter-offer. I appreciate that [Company] values my contribution.
I want to be honest about where I'm at:
My decision to explore other opportunities wasn't primarily about compensation—it was about [growth / role scope / specific reason].
While I'm grateful for the offer of [their counter], I need to consider whether the underlying reasons I started looking have changed.
Can we discuss [specific thing that would actually address your reason for leaving]?
I'll have a final decision by [date].

When You're Using Offer to Get Better Terms (Same Company)
Hi [Name],
Before I sign, I wanted to share some context that affects my decision.
I'm also considering an offer at [$X] that includes [specific competing terms]. I wasn't actively looking, but the opportunity came up.
I'd prefer to join [this company] because [genuine reason]. But the gap in [comp / equity / specific term] is significant enough that I need to raise it.
Is there any flexibility to close this gap? I'm not asking you to match exactly—I'm asking if we can find a middle ground that makes this an easy yes.
Let me know what's possible.

I'm looking forward to joining the team.

Declining the Other Offer Gracefully
Subject: Update on my decision - [Role]
Hi [Name],
Thank you again for the offer for [Role]. After careful consideration, I've decided to accept another opportunity.
This was a difficult decision—[genuine positive about them/process]. Ultimately, [brief honest reason without oversharing] made the other role a better fit for where I am now.
I'd like to stay in touch and hope our paths cross again.
Best,

Rules of Engagement
Do
| Action | Why |
|---|
| Be specific about timelines | Vague deadlines seem fake |
| Name what would make you choose them | Gives them a target to hit |
| Express genuine preference | People help those who actually want to be there |
| Give them a chance to respond | Don't ambush with "I'm leaving tomorrow" |
| Be honest if asked directly | Lies destroy trust and burn bridges |
Don't
| Action | Why |
|---|
| Fabricate offers | You will get caught; industry is small |
| Give ultimatums | "Match this or I walk" kills goodwill |
| Share confidential details | "Company X offered $Y" is often confidential |
| Pit companies against each other repeatedly | One round is negotiation; multiple rounds is auction |
| Accept then renege | Nuclear option—only if truly necessary |
Timing Strategy
| Scenario | Optimal Timing |
|---|
| Have offer A, waiting on B | Tell B immediately; ask A for extension |
| Have offer A, B moving slow | Give B a deadline tied to A's deadline |
| Verbal offer only | Get it in writing before using as leverage |
| Offer expires tomorrow | Be honest about timeline; ask for 48-72hr extension |
Extension Request Script
"I'm very interested in this role and want to give it proper consideration. Is it possible to extend the deadline to [date]? I want to make a thoughtful decision, and a few more days would help."
Most companies will grant 3-7 days. If they won't, that's a data point.
What If They Can't Match?
| Their Response | Your Options |
|---|
| "This is our best offer" | Decide on total package value, not just comp |
| "We can't match base but can do [X]" | Evaluate the alternative (equity, bonus, review cycle) |
| "We need you to decide now" | Pressure tactic—politely hold your timeline |
| "We'll match everything" | Great, but ask: why weren't they offering this before? |
The Stay vs. Go Framework
If current employer counters:
| Factor | Weight |
|---|
| Why did you start looking? | High—is that fixed? |
| Will this change your trajectory? | Medium—or just delay exit? |
| How will you be perceived? | Low—but consider team dynamics |
| Is the counter sustainable? | Medium—or will resentment build? |
Statistic: ~50% of people who accept counteroffers leave within 18 months anyway. The underlying issues rarely disappear.
After the Negotiation
Regardless of outcome:
- Thank everyone involved (even those you declined)
- Don't gloat about what you got
- Perform in the role you chose
- Stay connected with contacts from companies you declined
The industry is smaller than you think. Today's declined offer is tomorrow's hiring manager.
Having options is not disloyalty. It's clarity.
