Inertia v3 Features
HTTP Requests
Use the useHttp hook for standalone HTTP requests that do not trigger Inertia page visits. It provides the same developer experience as useForm, but for plain JSON endpoints.

Instant Visits
Navigate to a new page immediately without waiting for the server response. The target component renders right away with shared props, while page-specific props load in the background.

Polling
Use the usePoll hook to automatically refresh data at intervals. It handles cleanup on unmount and throttles polling when the tab is inactive.

Polling and Query-State Ownership
Treat polling, deferred props, and infinite-scroll loads as concurrent Inertia visits. A background response owns only the props it refreshes; it never owns a tab, view, filter, sort, cursor, or other foreground query state.
- Set
preserveUrl: true on background refreshes that must not navigate.
- Specify
only, reset or merge intent, and polling concurrency mode explicitly.
- Keep query-derived props out of background
only lists unless the refresh intentionally owns them.
- Cancel or reject stale async requests when a newer same-path query navigation starts. Prevent unrelated background work from starting while a foreground visit is in flight, while allowing deferred props belonging to that new page to load.
- Update client-only query state with Inertia client visits such as
router.replace(...), not window.history.replaceState, so Inertia's page URL and browser history stay aligned.
- Consider polling, deferred props, and
InfiniteScroll together; they share Inertia's async request stream and can finish out of order.
For a regression, delay a background response, change query-backed UI state, release the response, and assert the URL, selected control, page props, and rendered data still describe the same scope.
WhenVisible
Lazy-load a prop when an element scrolls into view. Useful for deferring expensive data that sits below the fold:

InfiniteScroll
Automatically load additional pages of paginated data as users scroll:

The server must use Inertia::scroll() to configure the paginated data. Use the search-docs tool with a query of infinite scroll for detailed guidance on buffers, manual loading, reverse mode, and custom trigger elements.
Server-Side Patterns

Common Pitfalls
- Using traditional
<a> links instead of Inertia's <Link> component (breaks SPA behavior)
- Forgetting to add loading states (skeleton screens) when using deferred props
- Not handling the
undefined state of deferred props before data loads
- Using
<form> without preventing default submission (use <Form> component or e.preventDefault())
- Forgetting to check if
<Form> component is available in your Inertia version
- Using
router.cancel() instead of router.cancelAll() (v3 breaking change)
- Assuming
preserveUrl prevents stale props from being applied; it protects URL ownership, not response ordering
- Letting direct History API writes diverge from Inertia's in-memory page URL
- Using
router.on('invalid', ...) or router.on('exception', ...) instead of the renamed httpException and networkError events
