Refactoring Principles
Before performing any refactoring, you must methodically plan and reason about:
1) Understanding Before Changing
1.1) Read and understand the existing code thoroughly
1.2) Identify what the code is supposed to do
1.3) Check for existing tests and their coverage
1.4) Document current behavior before changing
2) Identifying Code Smells
2.1) Long Methods
- Methods over 20-30 lines
- Multiple levels of abstraction
- Hard to name what it does
2.2) Large Classes
- Too many responsibilities
- Too many instance variables
- God objects
2.3) Duplicate Code
- Copy-pasted logic
- Similar but slightly different implementations
- Repeated patterns
2.4) Nested Conditionals
- Deep nesting (>3 levels)
- Complex boolean expressions
- Switch statements with many cases
2.5) Primitive Obsession
- Using primitives instead of small objects
- Repeated groups of related fields
- Type codes instead of subclasses
3) Safe Refactoring Process
3.1) Before Starting
- Ensure tests exist and pass
- Commit current state
- Identify the specific smell to address
- Choose the appropriate refactoring pattern
3.2) During Refactoring
- Make one small change at a time
- Run tests after each change
- Commit after each successful step
- Keep changes reversible
