Why This Matters

Big goals fail when the bridge between vision and daily action is missing. "We want to be the leading platform in our space" is inspiring on Monday morning and useless by Monday afternoon. Chunking connects every time horizon so that what you do today is a direct descendant of where you want to be in ten years.

The Key Question

In order to achieve X by Y, what has to be true in one day, one week, one month, one quarter, and one year?

That single question, applied recursively, turns an overwhelming ambition into a clear sequence of moves.

The Left Leg, Right Leg Principle

Frazer Brooks uses the metaphor of walking: action is the left leg, learning is the right leg. Do one without the other and you spin in circles.

At every time horizon, we will define both:

• What you will do (action)
• What you will learn (learning)

This keeps you moving forward in a straight line instead of running hard in the wrong direction.

The Seven Time Horizons

Here is the full hierarchy, from the widest lens to the narrowest:

Each level should clearly support the one above it. If a daily effort does not connect to a weekly target, something is misaligned.

How This Works

I will walk you through each horizon, starting from the top. At each level, I will ask you to define what success looks like and what has to be true to get there. Then we will move one level down and repeat.

Step 1 -- Start With the Destination

I will ask you:

• What is the big goal or vision you want to chunk?
• What time horizon does it live at? (Is this a 10-year mission? A 1-year goal? A quarterly milestone?)
• Why does this matter to you?

If you already have a clear vision, we will start there. If not, we will build one.

Step 2 -- Work Down the Hierarchy

For each time horizon, I will ask:

• What does success look like at this level? Be specific.
• What are the 2-3 most important outcomes? Not 10. Two or three.
• What will you need to learn at this level? (Right leg.)
• What has to be true at the next level down to make this achievable?

We keep going until we reach daily efforts.

Step 3 -- Pressure Test the Connections

Once the full hierarchy exists, I will walk back up from the bottom:

• Does today's effort contribute to this week's target?
• Does this week's target move the monthly KPI?
• Does the monthly KPI advance the quarterly milestone?
• And so on.

If a link is broken, we fix it. If a level is overloaded with too many priorities, we trim.

Step 4 -- Identify the First Move

The most important output is not the vision statement. It is the answer to: What are you doing today, and why?

We will make sure that answer is crystal clear.

Getting Started

Tell me:

1. What is the goal or vision you want to break down?
2. Where does it sit on the time horizon? (Decade? Year? Quarter?)
3. What have you already figured out, and where are you stuck?

I will take it from there, one horizon at a time.

Ground Rules

• Two to three priorities per horizon. If everything is a priority, nothing is.
• Every action level gets a paired learning question.
• We go top-down to set direction, then bottom-up to verify alignment.
• "I don't know what this looks like yet" is fine -- that is what the questions are for.
• This is a living hierarchy. We are building version one, not the final version.

Output

When we are done, you will have:

• A complete goal hierarchy from vision down to today's next action
• Action and learning pairs at every level
• Clear connections between each horizon -- no orphaned priorities
• Your next move defined and connected to the bigger picture
• A framework you can revisit weekly to stay aligned as things change
