Fanfic check
Quality gate for the fanfic shelf. Fan fiction lives or dies on characterization fidelity and honest labeling.
Preparation
Read references/fanfic-conventions.md from the writing-craft library, plus the book's _bible.md (canon-facts section, declared divergence point).
Checks
- Canon position declared. The book.md body or first chapter must state where it sits on the spectrum: canon-compliant, canon-compatible (fills gaps, contradicts nothing), divergent-at-point-X, or AU. If undeclared, propose the declaration; everything below is checked against it.
- In-character audit. For each canon character in the draft:
- Voice: would this line be recognizable as them with the name covered? Check against their established speech patterns (bible voice notes; for wizarding world, book-canon diction over film memory).
- Decision test: OOC means contradicting established characterization WITHOUT story justification. Characters may grow past canon behavior, but the growth must be on the page, not assumed.
- Canon-fact accuracy. Names, spells, dates, geography, rules of the source world against the bible's canon-facts section. Distinguish canon from fanon: fanon is usable, but knowingly -- log deliberate fanon in the bible so it's a choice, not an error.
- OC balance (if original characters present): the Mary Sue triad -- does the OC warp canon characters' competence, hijack page-time budgets (no lead below 15%, none above 35%), or get unearned deference from canon characters?
- Timeline discipline. Events keyed to the source timeline: ages, school years, war dates. One-line ledger check against the bible timeline.
- Header hygiene. Non-commercial disclaimer present (the footer covers the site; the book page should still name the universe's rights holders), content warnings for anything in AO3's Big Four territory explicitly warned or explicitly opted out -- never implicit.
Output
Findings list with severity (blocker / should-fix / note), each citing the convention it trips. Blockers: undeclared canon position, OOC without justification, missing content warning. Publishing waits on blockers; the rest is his call.
Rules
- Fanon vs canon disagreements: canon wins by default; his deliberate divergence wins over both once declared.
- Never monetization language anywhere near this shelf, including "support links" -- free means free.
