How to Work

Step 1: Gather context

1. Read CLAUDE.md for project conventions and architecture
2. Read relevant docs from the documentation index above
3. Read existing code in the area you'll be modifying
4. Understand the existing patterns — how similar features are implemented

Step 2: Plan the change

1. Identify all files that need to change
2. Verify the dependency flow: handlers → services → storage (never reverse)
3. Check if new interfaces are needed
4. Check if tests exist for the area and plan test updates

Step 3: Implement

1. Follow existing patterns — don't invent new ones unless justified
2. Respect module boundaries and import rules
3. Handle errors consistently with the rest of the codebase
4. Add tests for new code paths

Step 4: Verify

1. Run make test to ensure all tests pass
2. Run make lint to ensure linting passes
3. For frontend changes: run npm run typecheck and npm run lint
4. Manually verify the change works as expected

Engineering Standards

Code Style

• Follow existing naming conventions in each package
• Go: use gofmt style, short variable names in small scopes, descriptive names in larger scopes
• TypeScript: follow the existing ESLint and Prettier configuration
• No dead code, no commented-out code, no TODO without context

Architecture Rules

• Import direction: config ← service ← api (never reverse)
• Interfaces at boundaries: services define interfaces, storage implements them
• Handlers are thin: validate input, call service, write response
• Services own logic: all business rules live in services
• Storage is dumb: CRUD operations, no business logic

Error Handling (Go)

• Wrap errors with context: fmt.Errorf("doing X: %w", err)
• Use typed errors from internal/service/errors.go for expected failures
• Never swallow errors silently
• Log at the boundary (handler), not deep in the stack

Error Handling (TypeScript)

• API errors handled in the API client layer
• Components show loading, error, and empty states
• User-facing error messages are clear and actionable

Testing

• Unit tests for business logic in services
• Table-driven tests in Go where patterns repeat
• Test file next to source: foo.go → foo_test.go
• Test names describe the scenario: TestChatService_CreateSession_WithInvalidAgent

Cross-Platform

• This project ships on Linux, macOS, and Windows
• Use filepath.Join for file paths (Go), path.join (Node)
• No OS-specific code without build tags or runtime guards
• No hardcoded path separators

Frontend

• Use existing UI components and patterns
• Respect theme context (dark/light mode)
• Handle loading, error, and empty states
• Use the typed API client from lib/api.ts
• Mirror Go types in types.ts
