Common Pitfalls

• Unquoted Parentheses/Special Characters in Link Labels - Never put unquoted parentheses (), brackets [], braces {}, or colons : directly inside link text |label| (e.g., A -->|Parse (Fallback)| B). The Jison lexer parses unquoted ( or [ as node shape tokens, breaking the parser with Expecting 'SQE'... got 'PS'. ALWAYS wrap labels containing special characters in double quotes inside pipes: A -->|"Parse (Fallback)"| B.
• Angle Brackets & Generics in Node Labels - Never use raw < and > (e.g. Result<T, E>) in flowchart node text or labels. Use tildes Result~T, E~ or HTML entities Result<T, E>. Raw < is treated as an unclosed HTML tag, breaking diagram parsing with errors like Expecting ... got 'PS'.
• Invalid Arrow Syntax - Never use <---| (3 hyphens) or invalid arrow/label combinations. For labeled arrows in flowcharts, use exactly 2 hyphens: A -->|label| B, A <--|label| B, or dashed A -.->|label| B. Extra hyphens like <---| cause parser errors (Expecting ... got 'PS').
• Breaking characters - Avoid {} in comments, use proper escape sequences for special characters
• Syntax errors - Misspellings break diagrams; validate syntax in Mermaid Live
• Overcomplexity - Split complex diagrams into multiple focused views
• Missing relationships - Document all important connections between entities
